Robert asks…

what does a vaginal yeast infection look like?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Different types of infections:

Signs of yeast infections:
White, cottage cheese-like discharge
Swelling and pain around the vulva
Intense itching

Signs of bacterial vaginosis:
A white, gray or yellowish vaginal discharge
A fishy odor that is strongest after sex or after washing with soap
Itching or burning
Slight redness and swelling of the vagina or vulva

Signs of trichomoniasis
A watery, yellowish or greenish bubbly discharge
An unpleasant odor
Pain and itching when urinating
Most apparent after your period

Once you start puberty a white and/or clear wet mucous discharge is normal. The vagina is self-cleaning. This same discharge increases the closer you get to ovulation and when you are sexually aroused. Trust me, you don’t ever want it to go away. It is what makes sex possible. You will also have your own unique musky scent and it will smell stronger to you than to others.

You can have this normal discharge for weeks, months or even years before getting your first period. It will also continue after you get your period. Some girls do produce more discharge than others. You can wear a pantyliner if it bothers you.

Your normal white/clear discharge will turn yellow or dry yellow when exposed to air. If it is coming out yellow, then you probably have a bacterial infection and need to see a doctor.

Different Types of Discharge:

White: Thick, white discharge is common at the beginning and end of your cycle. Normal white discharge is not accompanied by itching. If itching is present, thick white discharge can indicate a yeast infection.

Clear and stretchy: This is “fertile” mucous and means you are ovulating.

Clear and watery: This occurs at different times of your cycle and can be particularly heavy after exercising.

Yellow or Green: May indicate an infection, especially if thick or clumpy like cottage cheese or has a foul odor.

Spotting Blood/Brown Discharge: May happen right after periods, and is just “cleaning out” your vagina. Old blood looks brown. This may occur when you are ovulating/mid-cycle.

What does a yeast infection feel like and look like?

i’ve always had discharge from my vagina… i thought it was normal and i use pantyliners but it’s always been a little yellow…is there anything wrong with that? and i have just started having sex.. used birth control and my bf is free of stds… he just got checked.. but i am feeling a little bit itchy around in my vaginal hole? normal?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Hello there! Being that you just began having sex, this is a definite possibility. The tissues in and around the vagina are delicate and get irritated or chaffed easily. This would cause some itching as you heal. Which happens quickly with these tissues. The discharge that you are describing sounds very normal. If you had a yeast infection, you would be extremely itchy, to the point of wanting to pull your hair out. Also, there would be a white, heavy, thick, cottage cheese like discharge. I personally have never has one, but this is what I have learned and what I have also heard from women I know that have had them. I’m lucky I guess. Anyhow, I think that you are just fine. Perhaps some extra lubrication would be helpful with sex not being so traumatic to those tissues. At least until you are used to sexual activity. This will eventually go away with time. Be sure to practice safe sex ok..There is no sense in taking any chances. I hope that this has been helpful to you. Best of luck!

Susan asks…

What Could This Be? Am I Infected? Yeast Infection?

Not Much Too Say: I Think I’m Infected With A Vaginal Yeast Infection. I’ve Looked Up The Symptoms But They Don’t Really Occur To How Mines Feel. It’s Said That The Symptoms Are:

Vaginal Burning
Vaginal Itching
– Burning When Trying To Pass Urine
– Redness/Swelling
A Discharge That Looks Like Cottage Cheese

I Have No Burning What So Ever,There Is Redness But I Think That’s Just Natural ( Never Seen My Vagina Being Pink), I Pee Just Fine, I Do Have A Lumpy Discharge, And There Sometimes Is An External Itching.

Any One Knows What This Could Be? I Mean If It’s Bad I Will Call My Doctor And Tell An Adult. I Just Need Help! I Want To Know What This Could Be!

~ Thank You!

Go to any drug store and get a medicine (cream or suppository) for yeast infections. If it doesn’t help, you need to see a doctor. Yeast infections don’t always present with the above mentioned symptoms. You don’t say how old you are but you really need to talk to your mother about this too.
