Thrush, is an irritating fungal infection triggered by the species, Candida fungus. Popularly known as yeast infection, it usually attacks people with low immunity, weakness, old age and ill health, HIV infection or on steroids.
1. Thrush symptoms in infants:
In infants or toddlers, thrush is usually mild and non serious but can be painful. it may cause diaper rashes due to the presence of thrush causing yeast in the stool. in the mouth, thrush patches look like a velvety white coating on tongue, and can be easily mistaken for milk or curd residue. The patches stick firmly and are difficult to wipe off; if rubbed profusely can bleed and result in a sore tongue and mouth. The baby refuses feeds and food, which leads to poor appetite and weakness. Swallowing is difficult and the baby is generally fussy due to oral discomfort. Infants with thrush, can pass it to their mothers who are breast feeding them causing sore and itchy nipples.
2. Thrush symptoms in adults:
Thrush causing, candida fungus, is on an average, present in all healthy adults in small amounts in their mouths, skin or the digestive system. when it multiplies in proportion, thrush symptoms, manifest themselves in different parts of the body accordingly. Though kept under check by other micro organisms in the body, candida fungus grows if the body provides a favorable environment in terms of some illness or medicines, stress, HIV infection, cancer etc.
In adults, oral incidence of thrush infection is sudden and witnesses no incubation period. White lesion like patches are seen on the tongue and the inner oral cavity. best compared to a cottage cheese like layering on tongue, scraping can be painfully bleeding. The patient goes through an irritating oral discomfort and has difficulty in swallowing. if not attended on time, thrush spreads down the esophagus and beyond, and leads to fever and inflammation of the throat.
When a person is also fighting a deadly disease like cancer or HIV and already has a weak immune system, thrush can be more severe in manifestation and may often envelope the lungs, skin liver etc..People who are addicted to smoking, or females taking birth control pills are more susceptible.
3. Vaginal thrush symptoms:
Vaginal thrush or Yeast infection is a common vaginal disease in women and can be categorized into complicated and uncomplicated thrush depending on the severity of symptoms. in normal cases, a woman complains of itching, stinging sensations and soreness in and around the vagina, leading to painful sex and uncomfortable urination. Sometimes an odorless, thin/thick vaginal discharge is also reported. if ignored,the situation may aggravate causing serious complicated thrush which reflects a red and swollen vagina/vulva, cracks and calluses around the vaginal passage and sometimes painful sores of increasing magnitude.
4. Penile thrush symptoms:
Male thrush symptoms manifests itself as a red, swollen, patchy area around the penis head.
Urination becomes difficult due to itching and a brutal burning sensation accompanying the passage of urine.Engaging in sex with with a partner carrying thrush can lead to infection in both males and females.
Thrush is not a life threatening infection and is easily curable. The yeast causing thrush is present in our body already, the prevention lies in controlling its over multiplication. Antifungal medications, in tablet or liquid form are generally prescribed for two weeks to cure thrush, depending on the cause and extent of the infection. Anti-thrush creams for skin, pessaries for vaginal insertion or an oral tablet course are possible treatment options.Healthy lifestyle and conscious hygiene also go a long way in blocking a recurring thrush infection. so stay alert, protected and fit and say goodbye to any possible thrush threats….
