I read somewhere that taking a large amount of folic acid can cure a vaginal infection?

There wasn’t too much information on the site, as though they didn’t want to give info to people without further studies being done. However, taking 1200 to 3600 mcg of folic acid supposedly cures bacterial vaginosis, and taking the daily recommended amout prevents it. Has anyone heard of this? Do you know how true this is?

I read on another site that large amounts of folic acid is not lethal, but has no benefit past 1000 mcg. Also, it mentioned that taking daily amounts over 1000 mcg could mask a B12 deficiency.
Alicia, thank you for your information on bacterial vaginosis, but I’m just curious about the supposed natural cure/prevention.

I have never heard that, nor do I know anything about folic acid. But I can tell you one thing that will kill an infection and does it very fast, is cheap, not messy.

Most of the medicines on the market will take as long as 2-4 days to kill the infection, and some where in there it kills the pain and burning of the infection. The one I know will do the trick in a matter of hours.

Get you some Alka-Seltzer original, follow the directions on the package. You can take it every 4 hours. After you have taken your first dose, and the first time you have to urinate, there should be no burning. Keep on taking it every 4 hours. Before you go to bed, take another dose, by in the morning, the infection is gone. I always keep a box at my house on hand just in case an infection flares up on me. The first sign of it, I take a dose and it is gone within an hour.

Please help. 17wks pregnant with thick, yellow, clumpy discharge. Yeast infection or something else?

I am 17wks pregnant from my lmp (which was 09/14/11). I was just diagnosed with a vaginal yeast infection. The doctor told me to use monistat 3 vaginal suppositories. Thing is I thought the discharge with vaginal yeast infections was thick white & clumpy. The discharge I’m experiencing is thick yellowish/brown & clumpy. Along with the discharge I am experiencing vaginal itching. Can vaginal yeast infections have thick yellowish/brownish clumpy discharge too. This is my 2nd pregnancy. My 1st pregnancy ended in miscarriage @ 5-6wks. I just want to get this taken care of. Has anyone else experienced vaginal yeast infection with discharge like mine. Or could it be a bacterial infection. I know vaginal bacterial infections can cause complications during pregnancy & I don’t want anything to happen. Thanks so much

Sounds to me more like an STD. Every yeast infection I’ve ever had has been white and clumpy discharge, along with itching. Yellow/brown discharge sounds more like chlamydia or gonorrhea. I’ve also had BV and that didn’t have yellow discharge either. I’d get checked ASAP if I were you.

Vaginal Odor….please help ?

So… for about 3 months I have noticed that my discharge has smelt almost sweet like and is more chunky. I have noticed a change, so I know I am not crazy haha. I am 21 and I have had sex but not since I broke up with my bf over a year ago. I went to my dr. and she prescribed me vaginal bacterial infection medicine and it didn’t help so I went back to her and she did a full pap (which I had one done in june and everything turned out normal) and as well as a culture test and STD tests and everything came out normal…. not even an infection. Well, I know something is different and I am not sure if it is due to me drinking more alcohol then ever before or me starting to exercise frequently…. or what!? I asked her what I am supposed to do and she said nothing, well…. I don’t want to do nothing and trust me I shower and take really good care of myself (I have never even had a bladder infection/yeast infection or other genital issue). So any help would be greatly appreciated!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

This is natural. This is the smell of the bacteria that your vagina secretes which allows it to naturally clean itself. Unfortunately, it smells bad… But you probably shouldn’t use regular baby powder inside of the labia. Corn starch is similar to powder and would be safer to use. There are gynecologically tested wipes that you can use and special washes, but the smell will come back because it shoud. This is a good bacteria necessary to kill infectious intruders.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Treating Naturally
- Eat or apply plain yogurt directly to the vagina. Alternatively, a tampon soaked in yogurt can be inserted.

- Garlic has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Garlic can be taken internally or can be applied directly on the vagina.

- Use calendula herb to reduce the inflammation.

- Herbs like tea tree oil, black walnut, Echinacea and goldenseal are effective in treating bacterial vaginitis.

- Use boric acid douche to acidify vaginal pH.

- Douche to reduce inflammation Add 12 tsp of calendula to boiling water, steep the mixture and cool it before use.

- Soak a tea bag in water and cool it in refrigerator and then apply it to the vagina.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Dry skin and itching on the outside often means a yeast infection. NONE of the symptoms you describe are typical o herpes.

An external yeast infection often causes dry, peeling skin, for example on the labia, soreness and/or itching and redness.

She could also have a bacterial infection – there are several possibilities but I would say that herpes was not the cause of those symptoms. When I had symptoms exactly like that – the doctor described it as looking like dermatitis – it was a yeast infection.

She needs to go to the doctor asap though. You just can’t be messing about with anything ‘down there’.

There are 2 types of herpes. Herpes 1 and herpes 2.
Herpes 1 is the one that people get on their mouth – cold sores
and herpes 2 is genital.

The 2 can be transmitted from one place to another but it is rare.

My boyfriend had a ‘cut’ on his mouth and went down on me and 2 days later i was breaking out in herpes down there it was THE most painful thing EVER. However i my tests came back saying i had herpes 1 so it was transmitted from the mouth. I think its pretty uncommon for this to happen though…. And to spread it.

The doctor told me it was very likely for me not to have another outbreak because its not ‘in the right place’

No, it’s not normal. Both trichomonas and bacterial vaginosis(usually due to Gardnerella vaginalis) can cause a whitish-yellow discharge and odor. A fishy smell is usually associated with bacterial vaginosis. However, if there is any redness, itching, or irritation it may be a sign of trich. Either way, both conditions are easily treated with antibiotics but you have to go see your dr.

You need to be careful because if the infection has bot gone and you have intercourse you may push the infection back into the vaginal area and your infection will soon come back and i know its really uncomfortanle and you will have to go ever longer without sex!!!

Its better to wait a few days (even a week) then rather having your infection come back!!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

That’s your body’s reaction to your immune system throughout the middle portion of your body going into overdrive to fight the bacteria, which means the cream is working. I suggest you get someone to massage your back for the cramping.

You may also notice a slight fever develop throughout your body over the next several hours. You should dress light (or not at all, if you’re in private) to dissipate the excess heat. It’ll be like a regular fever in that you’ll feel like bundling up, but that’s exactly the opposite of what will help.

This is an incredible book because it helps the sufferers of yeast infection, especially those with repetitive episodes, to understand the problem rather than railing on what possible methods should be applied to get rid of the problem. Linda Allen explains in the book how important it is to understand first the root cause of the yeast infection in order to know the right cure for it. One part that I loved after reading the book is the part where Linda explains that there are foods that could promote the growth of yeast infection and there are those that prevent it. it got me thinking that we should really be cautious of what to eat because it could cause us a lot more than what we have bargained for.

Since Linda Allen is an expert on the food groups, it is not hard for me to believe that she could put together what many consider as the best dietary guide for the sufferers of yeast infection. she helps us distinguish which food to eat that would aid in the road to recovery and which food to stay away from.

I can definitely say that, upon reading the book, the author has put her whole mind and heart into her work. in order to compile valuable information for her readers — both sufferers and their families, Linda Allen had put a lot of work in writing this guide; and I can attest that she had done very well. nothing is wasted as she unravels different information to prevent and cure yeast infection from every possible angle.

If you wipe your bottom after going number 2 and some of the stool gets by and your vagina. The fluid/moisture will help the bacteria enter. Or, during sex if there is bacteria/dirt present from dirty hands. Or, from anal sex if stool got in it because it was on the penis. Or, dirty underwear! Not every bit of dirt or uncleanliness casues infections however, your body is quite capable of fighting those germs off. Occasionaly however we can get an infection and plenty medicine is available even over the counter. A friend of mine gets them all the time. She is diabetic and very prone to get vaginal infections. I on the other hand have had maybe 2 in my 40 years. Children can even get them from bubble baths (can aggrevate ones own natural ability to keep the right balance) and to much sugar. Sugar feeds bacteria.

While a hot tub can cause infections, there are other things that are sometimes done in the tub that can cause the risk to increase dramatically! I warn against penetrational sex in a hot tub because the inward motion of the penis pushes the bacterial water into the vaginal area and can be quite dangerous! Sex in any standing water is not safe!

NO it is NOT chlamydia! Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that needs a warm, moist environment to thrive.
Answer #2 had misinformation also.
It is possible to get frequent and reoccurring yeast infections on and in your body. Over all there are some people who are very susceptible to yeast infections just by what they eat. Yes, I said eat! Foods with sugar, flour, yeast and several other ingredients can and do make your “normal” body yeast over grow. Do a web search on “yeast free diets”. Follow the list very closely on what NOT to eat. If you do go to the doctor, ask him to check your blood for yeast.

Vaginal Infections: Is it me, or my boyfriend?

Me and my boyfriend of two years now have a long distance relationship. We only see each other about twice a month. However, every time I have sex with him, I come up with some kind of vaginal infection a few days later. We’ve both been checked, and do not have any STD’s. The most frequent infection I get is a UTI. I’ve had a couple bacterial infections, and now I have started getting yeast infections. Is there something wrong with my body that is causing all the infections, or could it be him? The UTI’s stopped when his doctor gave him the same antibiotic my family doctor gave me (cipro). But I am still having problems. This is my second yeast infection in the last two months. These infections always come up a day or so after we’ve had intercourse. We do not have anal sex (something I have been asked about since the yeast infections started). We do use condoms, and I am on the pill. My OBGYN is of no help, and if you’ve read my other question regarding female health, all she does every time I have a problem is tell me to lose weight…and frankly I think she’s full of it. Any insight anyone could give me is appreciated.

Most people are familiar with the terms yeast infection, oral thrush, or athletes feet, however they are not informed that the same yeast responsible for these common conditions can also cause a host of other health problems.

One of the other most common areas it resides is the gastrointestinal tract. If it gets a good stranglehold in the GI tract, it can then travel through the bloodstream and infiltrate any system or organ in the body.

It is quite fond of environments that are warm and moist, which is why it tends to accumulate in places like the mouth, feet and genitals. Candidiasis usually lives in harmony in our body, because our healthy bacteria keeps it in balance, but many times something occurs in the body that upsets this natural balance and the healthy bacteria are not able to maintain homeostasis. This allows Candida yeast to grow out of control and take over territory.

When this occurs a variety of detrimental effects may occur in the body. it is often the instigator of many physical health problems that plague millions such as headaches, sore throat, irritable bowel, indigestion, heart burn, hormonal fluctuations, eczema, gas, migraines, chronic fatigue, bloating, weight gain, rashes, low sex drive, dizziness and nausea.

Common mental health conditions or cognitive dysfunctions that may be the result of yeast overgrowth may include, but are not limited to Depression, Anxiety, Mania, Paranoia, Schizophrenia, Mood Swings, Hyperactivity, Impaired Memory, Short Term Memory Loss, Problem Solving Abilities and Attention Deficit Disorder.

Candida that has grown out of control may be a contributing factor in disorders and maladies that are completely incapacitating such as Fibromyalgia, Crohns, Prostatitis, MS and Autism. actually, Candida may play a role in most any physical or mental health problem known to exist.

The brain and nervous system are the organs effected by Candida overgrowth most often, but it also impacts the digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, reproductive, endocrine, urinary, musuloskeletal and lymphatic systems.

There are two main factors responsible for the overgrowth of Candidiasis. They are diet and overuse of antibiotics.

Diet is important because your choices of food either encourage or discourage yeast growth. Candida’s primary source of food is sugar and the average persons diet is very high in sugar, refined foods, starches and simple carbohydrates. when you eat these foods, it provides the yeast a tasty banquet to nourish and flourish in abundance. the more sugars and refined carbohydrates that you eat, the more overgrowth you will have.

This problem is magnified even more because sugar and refined food have almost no nutritional value what-so-ever. therefore the body is not receiving sufficient vitamins and minerals that nurture a healthy body that can resist overgrowth of yeast and other bacteria. Not only that, all these refined foods and sugar lacking in nutritional value also contribute to other serious health problems like Obesity and Type II Diabetes.

Prescription antibiotics are a problem because when they are consumed they not only kill off the bacteria that is making you sick, but it also destroys out all your healthy bacteria. This leaves the field wide open for Candida to take over and proliferate freely.

Antibiotic use should be reserved for times when it is absolutely essential and friendly bacteria should be replaced in a supplement form during usage, but unfortunately that is not the case. They are overused in our society for situations where they are not even called for. Antibiotics also make it into our bodies through our meat and dairy supply, as it is common practice for farm animals to be injected with large doses of antibiotics.

Yeast overgrowth can also be encouraged with the use of other prescription drugs such as estrogen, birth control pills, steroids and immune suppressants.

Candidiasis is exceptionally resilient and cunning. Once overgrowth occurs it is very difficult to eliminate. it takes a great deal of persistence, time and knowledge.

Your first line of defense in preventing and controlling yeast overgrowth is to eliminate the use of antibiotics unless required to save your life or you have a condition that won’t respond to anything else and follow a Candida diet, which removes sugar and refined carbohydrates completely and encourages a healthy diet rich in vegetables, high quality protein and limited amounts of complex carbohydrates.

It’s also extremely important to educate yourself as thoroughly as possible about all the aspects of this condition. Candida overgrowth is very complex and multi-faceted. Even those treating the condition often don’t have a complete understanding of it’s depth.

in my last column, I touched upon why some dogs have “doggy odor,” and explained there are a few normal or natural sources of odor in our canine companions. This week, I will explain a few possible abnormal or unnatural odors that might emit from our four-legged friends. Poor grooming of a dog with long, thick or matted hair can cause the haircoat to be a source of unpleasant odor. a coat that is not kept clean and groomed can trap dirt and other substances with odors and, if chronically wet, it can harbor bacteria and yeast. Some dog breeds just depend on people to keep their coats healthy and odor-free. for some pooches, regular grooming and clipping of the hair really helps. Skin diseases can cause abnormal odors on affected dogs. Allergy causes increased glandular secretions, and this creates a musty odor. they also can encourage yeast infection or bacterial skin infection, which produce odors. Dogs with seborrhea and dogs with deep skin folds (such as an English bulldog) are subject to secondary proliferation of bacteria or yeast on the skin surface as well. Ear disease is a common source of odor. the smell can be yeasty or actually smell like sewage. Anal sac disease or excessive anal sac production can cause a very musty, pungent odor. Anal sacs can become abscessed and produce an even fouler odor than normal. Anal sacs that do not empty normally might produce an abnormal pungent odor around the hind end. Dental disease or mouth ulcers can produce bad breath (halitosis). Dental calculus harbors numerous bacteria that produce the odor. Dental disease also can lead to excessive drooling, causing skin around the mouth to become infected, leading to more odor production. Flatulence can be a problem for some dogs. This, of course, is embarrassing to them, and they don't like to admit it is their fault. if this is a problem, it could be diet-related. trying an alternate dog food might help. As usual, if you believe your pooch has odors that bother you, check with your veterinarian. we can't always fix everything, but usually we can help make things better.

in my last column, I touched upon why some dogs have “doggy odor,” and explained there are a few normal or natural sources of odor in our canine companions.
