Your Questions About Yeast Infection Cures

Lisa asks…

yeast infection!?

i think i have yeast infection….i am 13 years old.
*on my underwear i get thins yellow discharge
*i also get this liquid discharge that is wet

do i have yeast infection?
how can i cure it? w/o going to the doctor

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

A yeast infection is characterized by a white cottage-cheese liked discharge and itching in the vaginal area. The odor smells yeast-like or does not smell like anything.
Yellow discharge may mean something else.
Vaginal yellow discharge can be a symptom of vulvar vestibulitis or HPV condyloma viruses. Normal secretion should be white or colorless; gray, bloody, green and other colors and bad smell can be a sign of sexually transmitted diseases or any infection.

Different Types of Discharge

White: Thick, white discharge is common at the beginning and end of your cycle. Normal white discharge is not accompanied by itching. If itching is present, thick white discharge can indicate a yeast infection.

Clear and stretchy: This is “fertile” mucous and means you are ovulating.

Clear and watery: This occurs at different times of your cycle and can be particularly heavy after exercising.

Yellow or Green: May indicate an infection, especially if thick or clumpy like cottage cheese or has a foul odor.

Brown: May happen right after periods, and is just “cleaning out” your vagina. Old blood looks brown.

Spotting Blood/Brown Discharge: This may occur when you are ovulating/mid-cycle. Sometimes early in pregnancy you may have spotting or a brownish discharge at the time your period would normally come. If you have spotting at the time of your normal period rather than your usual amount of flow, and you have had sex without using birth control, you should check a pregnancy test.

Laura asks…

Can I use a tampon if I believe I cured my yeast infection?

So I just finished a 3 day kit to cure my yeast infection last night. I don’t notice any symptoms; no itching, burning, or abnormal discharge. I do notice a little redness but it’s not bad at all. I’m supposed to get my period today and I hate using pads. Do you think it would be ok to use a tampon or would it be a BAD idea?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

It was the time of the wheat harvest. The Lord sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning till the time appointed and plague ravaged the people, and from Dan to Beersheba seventy thousand men of them died. The angel stretched out his hand towards Jerusalem to destroy it, but the Lord thought better of this evil, and he said to the angel who was destroying the people, ‘Enough! Now withdraw your hand.’ The angel of the Lord was beside the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite. “When David saw the angel who was ravaging the people, he spoke to the Lord. ‘It was I who sinned;’ he said ‘I who did this wicked thing. But these, this flock, what have they done? Let your hand lie heavy on me then, and on my family.’

Nancy asks…

How can i cure a yeast infection without a doctor?

I dont have any medical insurance but im not sure if i have a yeast infection i just have really thick white discharge but it doesn’t smell or itch..any ideas of what i can do?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

I hope you too haven’t been having unprotected sex. Just advised another girl with similar symptoms only she had been having unprotected sex and didn’t know what maybe she was pregnant.

Go to your favorite pharmacy and look in the feminine hygiene products. Usually in the upper rows you will find several products that include salves and ointments you insert … Some of the lessor expensive ones you have to use nightly x7 days. The most expensive one is a one time dose is all. All these products at one time were prescription only. They are good and will cure most yeast infections.

Good luck.

Your Questions About Oral Thrush Causes

Lisa asks…

can oral thrush cause sore throat?

my little 3 and a half week old is taking nystantin (i dunno how to spell it) for oral thrush…but ive noticed when she cried her voice cracks and sometimes u cant even get a cry out and she sounds like a goose honking sometimes. can thrush cause a sore throat? i told my bf’s mom i think thats what it is, and she keeps telling me no its just her voice changing and getting raspy like mine. i think thats a load of BS because shes only 3 weeks old. so yeah, can it lead to a sore throat?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Yes it can but this sounds serious get her to a doctor NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t like the sound of the honking noise and inability to cry. Croup can cause a honking noise and it is SERIOUS in a 3week old especially.

Susan asks…

Can an oral thrush cause HIV?

Paul asks…

Can Cerazette (mini contraceptive pill) cause oral thrush?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

No. Oral thrush is a fungal infection (monilia), and you have to pick up the fungus from something. It is the same infection as vaginal thrush, just in a different place. One of the commonest causes is a course of broad spectrum antibiotics which reduces the ‘friendly and good’ bacteria that normally live in the mouth, letting this fungus get in and grow.
Hope this helps.

Lizzie asks…

how do i treat chronic oral thrush?

I’ve tried probiotics. Clotrimazole tablets (prescribed by the doctor), and even tried heavily restrictive dieting (restricting myself from carbs and sugars of any kind). The doctor has taken blood work, and said that he sees no sign of immune diseases. I do not have diabetes or family history of diabetes.

The doctor just shrugs about it, and orders me more oral medication… The drugs and the dieting help, but they are very inconvenient and temporary solutions.

How do I get this Candida (the yeast that causes thrush) back under control, so it balances itself out?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Basically the reason you have a yeast infection is because there’s an imbalance in your body. A healthy person has a balance between the yeast in their body and the good bacteria in their body.

Too much yeast, you have a yeast infection. Too much bacteria, you have a bacterial infection.

So, when you have a yeast infection you essentially have too much yeast in your body relative to the good bacteria. The natural way to treat it and bring back that balance is to starve the yeast and introduce more good bacteria into your body.

Oh and BTW – That’s why you often get relief from using the over the counter meds temporarily, and then the yeast infection comes back. The creams aren’t changing the source of the problem. They are just killing the yeast they come in contact with, and not balancing the yeast/bacteria in your body and actually sometimes end up making things a lot worse.

Oh BTW2 – That’s also why many times you’ll get a yeast infection after using antibiotics. Antibiotics kill all the bacteria in your body, the good and the bad. When that happens the balance between the yeast and good bacteria is off, and once again and you get a yeast infection.

Things you can add to your diet (to help promote good bacteria) are live yogurt cultures (or take Acidophilus), plenty of water, fresh vegetables, lots of protein rich foods, whey protein, raw garlic, nuts, seeds, oils, millet, rice and oat brans

Things you should remove from your diet (to starve the yeast) are all sodas, sugars, fruit, fermented foods, foods containing white flour, alcohol (especially beer), antacids and any product that has yeast or mold

Changing your diet will definitely get you on the road to balancing the yeast and good bacteria, but what I would also recommend is to use a homeopathic solution to help naturally speed up the process.

I always feel if there’s a natural way to do something, then it’s best to avoid the chemicals. I would look for an natural product, that can be taken orally to promote re-growth of the good bacteria in your body.

There are a few out there, I think they are probably all pretty good. One that I have used and was very effective for me was is yeastrol.
Best of Luck!

Hope this helps and best of luck! :)

Mark asks…

can oral thrush cause a persistant cough?

i had a bad cough a few months ago from a flu, i was given amoxycillin to which it did nothing but has now given me oral thrush, i was given a new course of tablets for the cough and a ear infection kefalaxin or something similar to them, now when i take the anti-biotics the cough goes but as soon as i finish the course its back and starts up again, now the oral thrush must have been there from taking the amoxycillin so that was a few weeks ago and i know its gone to my throat at the back of my tongue as i can feel it that far down

I know have a gel that will treat the thrush to start using today, but could the cough not be going because of the thrush? its been there unknown for so long?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Thrush can cause a bad cough. Try drinking lots of fluids with the medicine. If that doesn’t help, just try resting and don’t talk much for a few days. Thrush can be real nasty if you get too dehydrated.

Also, some benedryl can help suppress the coughing.

Hope that helps you. :)

Steven asks…

white Vaginal discharge?

Im having this odd white Vaginal discharge. I’ve been having this for a very long time, 2 years possibly. I am 18 years old. It does not smell. I thought it was a yeast infection but i took medication for a yeast infection and it hasn’t decreased. Im so confused about this. Should I take the yeast infection medication again? or what is going on with me? I cannot see a Female doctor because I have no job and my father cant know about this., if he did he would think i have an std because my grandmother spreads rumors about me all the time. Also if this is important or anything. It can sometimes make me itchy.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Don’t worry. When I was 18-20 I had it to. So did all my friends, its normal. Its fine

Thomas asks…

Would you still be interested after a yeast infection?

I have been dating this guy and we spent a weekend together at a hotel. We have discussed our HIV status and decided that condom would not be used every time. Two days after the weekend I felt sore in vaginal area and rushed to the doctor, who diagnosed a yeastlike infection. I got medication and a prescription for him. I invited him over and within the visit I informed him of the happenings. This was very embarrassing as it was our first encounter. I even took the liberty of doing another HIV test to show I was free.

He hasnt spoken to me in two days. I dont know what to think. SHould I have treated myself secretly? did I do the right thing? Would you change your mind? Why hasnt he called?
He said he was not experiencing any discomfort.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Well you must be dealing with a boy not a man, because everybody knows a yeast infection can occur normal in a woman’s body. He sounds to Dumb!! To even know what that is and probably shouldn’t be having sex!! Men can Have and Carry a yeast infection without signs and that’s exactly where you might have got it from. Women tend to always feel like it’s their fault. But it’s the Men who are Soooo Loose and Nasty!! He should be glad you told him, because problems like this takes guts and are very embarrassing. You were the responsible one to go to the doctor, get treated, and then Bring His Sorry A *S medicine that will help him. Yes!! You should have used a condom, but that goes without saying!! Right now we need to address the issue that your faced with Now!! Don’t waste your time on him any longer, find someone more understanding of woman’s body and their natural occurrences.
Good Luck!!

Sandra asks…

Cleaning up a yeast infection?

I’m 100% that I have a yeast infection. Am I suppose to wipe off the white stuff off or will it go away on its on after medication? I tried wiping it off my vulva area with a baby wipe but it’s really uncomfortable. I’m really scared to clean around my vaginal opening.

Is the white stuff going to clear up on its on after I get my medication?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

If you’ve never had a yeast infection before and this is your 1st one go to a OBGYN. Do not try to diagnose yourself.

You can Get monstat its an over the counter treatment you can get in any drug store. I suggest the 7 day treatment. Usually the 1 and 3 day treatments are too strong and cause irritation and aren’t a long enough course of treatment to clear up the infection. Also you can try a brand called yeast guard most of its products are natural, gentile, and actually work ( I’ve used it).

You can get Fluconazole ( this is the generic name) its an anti-fungal medication that you need a prescription for.

Good Luck & Take Care

Your Questions About Thrush Treatment

Maria asks…

Am I ok to buy thrush treatment OTC if it’s my first time?

I’ve just finished a course of Amoxicillin and developed thrush (or what I believe to be thrush) a few days ago. I heard that if it’s the first time you have thrush you’re supposed to go to the Doctors first but I’ve just rang mine up for an appointment and they’re closed for 2 weeks. I’ve bought some Canestan but I’m wary of using it. Will I be safe?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Your dr should have someone who is seeing their patients while their away call the clinic and they should be able to help connect you with that dr. You should not use medication with out knowing what you need to be treated for you may not even have thrush, you may just have a yeast infection which would require a different medication.

Laura asks…

Natural treatment of thrush in pregnancy; anyone tried yoghurt?

I’ve had thrush for about 5 weeks, with varying severity of symptoms because I’ve been using clotrimazole (canasten) and even tried the pessary. The pessary stopped symptoms fully for about a week, but now its back.

Has anyone tried using natural, unsweetened yoghurt internally, as a treatment for thrush in pregnancy? And did it work?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

I had terrible thrush when i was about 6 months pregnant, my mum told me to use yoghurt i looked at her like she was crazy! But i gave it a go, it seem to work really well and certainly cooled everthing down for for me! I want to bed with a huge pantliner like a tena lady and just put loads on and inside its stinks by the morning but it did help me!
I hope my advice works good luck and congratulations x

Michael asks…

whats the difference in treatment for thrush?

ive just been to the pharmacy for some treatment for thrush, i have had this before an was prescribed with the canestan pessary. i had tried the cream but it didnt do much. i found the pessary worked a lot more at that time. so again i have bought the pessary. is this a lot better then the cream?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

It’s not necessarily better than the cream, just works better for you.

Nancy asks…

40 weeks + 3days pregnant, atomic fluid or because of thrush treatment?

im 40 weeks + 3 days pregnant and yesterday i had treatment for thrush ( pessary + cream). last night i went to sleep and woke up early this morning because i could feel fluid dripping out and had wet knickers. i went back to sleep and the same happened again. is this due to the treatment or could it be atomic fluid? anyone had the same?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

What on earth is atomic fluid?!

AMNIOTIC fluid is the fluid surrounding the baby and from what you’ve described it sounds liek they’ve gone- if you suspect they may be leaking go to hospital as if you don’t go into labour naturally you’ll need to be induced as there is a chance infection can set in after a certain time. In meantime it’s important not to put anythign at all into the vagina to prevent bacteria entering the uterus now the baby is unprotected from germs.

Ruth asks…

Comments/suggestions from anyone who has used formaldehyde for treatment of thrush on a horse. ?

My vet has recommended formaldehyde for treatment of thrush for my horse. She has is all the time, sometimes worse than others. Use coppertox to keep under control. She is an older horse and I don’t want her to go lame. I hope this is not too aggressive of treatment for her and I am curious about antibiotic treatment that I have read about and have not tried. Thanks.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

I haven’t used straight Formaldehyde for thrush, but have used ‘Thrush Buster” which has formaldehyde in it. It works REALLY well. My biggest complaint with it is that the Gentian Violet (what makes it purple and also works as an anti-fungal) stains like crazy.

My 2 week old has thrush in the mouth she hasnt seen anyone but my partner went to the chemist and got thrush medicine and its been 3 days and it looks a tad bit better how long should it take to clear ? I am taking her this afternoon to the pharmacy to get it checked to make sure it is thrush

Yea i rang my doctor he said the same time frame so thats good to know . it can be painful for them im glad your twins dont have it makes it hard . She is such a happy baby nothing seems to affect her so cant complain

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Both my daughter and my son had thrush. That is some bad stuff. We had a time getting rid of it with my daughter. It believe it took 1-2 weeks to go away. With my daughter it kept coming back. They prescribed me some medicine that I was suppose to put in each of her cheeks with a dropper. She kept spitting the medicine out. It smelt bad so I didn’t blame her..lol…anyways the doctor finally suggested for me to get a q-tip and just spread the medicine all around in her mouth and it finally worked!! The twins haven’t got it yet and I sure hope they don’t. I’m sry your lil baby has that. I hope she gets well soon!!!

Mark asks…

What should we feed a baby thrush?

My friends cat, Mitten, brought in a baby thrush bird thingy but it can’t fly. We read that you can feed it soaked cat biscuits, but it wouldn’t! And we are very worried because we don’t know what it drinks and how and everything!!! Please help.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Put the baby back outside, the parents may be around, if the chick is fledging the parents will still care for it. Do not keep it as baby birds rarely survive when raised by humans. Also keep that cat inside where its supposed to be. Another problem is it is illegal to posses songbirds. Call your vet to find a bird rehabilitator they will know how to raise the chick.

Whatever you do don’t feed it milk or cottage cheese. Pasturized cow products will kill baby animals of any kind.

Charles asks…

Could thrush cause acid reflux in babies?

My baby might have thrush. Could this also be contributing to his acid reflux?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Nope, thrush is harmless, even though it can be quite painful.

For his acid reflux, try feeding him in a more upright position if at all possible, and keeping him upright for a while after feeding. It just happens sometimes!

Ken asks…

White and sore tongue that is not thrush?

Hello!

I was wondering….I am 13 years old, and my tongue is very white–it has like small white bumps on it–almost like raised white taste buds that are extremely, extremely sore and painful.

It’s been getting worse by the hour, and now my gums are hurting too. My parents originally thought it was thrush, but I looked at pictures of what thrush looks like on the tongue, and my tongue does not look like them.

We assume (my parents and I) that this is a yeast infection of some sort as I have eaten a lot of carbs/sugar in the last few days, and my immune system has been weak, and I’ve been stressed out…the list goes on.

Anyways, I hope I have not bored or confused you, but what do you guys think this is? Any ideas are appreciated!

Thanks so much!

K

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Definitely see a doctor immediately. Problems with the tongue can develop to problems with breathing, which is very serious. This might be allergies or an infection.

John asks…

Thrush/Cracks In Hooves (picture)?

http://s253.photobucket.com/albums/hh70/giddyup108/?action=view&current=8.jpg

here’s a picture of one of my horses hooves. she has thrush and you can see it in the picture but what i’m wondering about is this….the cracks in her heels? someone told me that cracks in the heels are sorta normal but if they get too deep and hold in too much moisture that’s where the thrush develops. are these heel cracks “normal’?

oh and the purple stuff on her hoof is thrushbuster.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Yes the cracks are normal that comes with natural hoof growth

Linda asks…

Now a question about Diaper Thrush?

Now that my son is staring to get rid of the Thrush in his mouth ( it looks 10x better then it has in the past week thanks to the GSE) he now has thrush on his bottom and front.I feel so awful. But i have a few questions if anyone can answer them.

1. They gave my a cream form of Nystatin for his diaper thrush. Do i rub this in or just put it on like diaper cream ( there werent any instructions except for ” Apply by topical Route four times daily” Do you use a lot or a little bit? I know you cover the whole area but how much?

2. I’ve seen pictures of the diaper thrush and they looked awful. Since i caught this early will it get that bad since he is being treated for it or will it just get worse before it gets better? Id feel awful if it got that bad.

3. Is it normal for a baby with mouth thrush to get diaper thrush and the same time or right after. Is it that i did something wrong to spread it. I feel so awful he’s so miserable and i feel like its my fault.
oh yeah question
4. Would you apply diaper cream in between using the thrush cream since its only used 4 times a day or would you just use the medicine.

And i have called the doctors office but noone returns my phone calls. Well they havent in the past two days and i’ve called like 6 times and they keep giving me to a nurses station where i have to leave a message and they are supposed to call me back so i thought id see what the moms on here suggested. Most of the time they have good ideas and 9 out of 10 times they work!!!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Our baby got this after taking an antibiotic a few weeks ago.

If you have started treating it with the Nystatin, then it will not get worse, as long as you’re taking care of it and don’t let the baby sit in the diapers too long, that type of thing.

Our daughter had oral thrush, then it went to the diaper area, perfectly normal.

Just put the Nystatin on like regular cream, don’t need to rub it in. Our baby had the Nystatin cream AND the Nystatin powder. We alternated between the two, and in 1.5 days it was almost gone!

NOT your fault!!! You can’t prevent this. It is caused by yeast, which everyone has in their bodies!! At least you’re taking care of it before it got worse!

Best wishes!!!!!

James asks…

Can IBS cause oral thrush?

First off I dont even know if what i have is thrush. The back of my tounge is all white and yellowish but it doesnt have that smooth look like pictures I have seen of thrush. I have had doctors look but they kinda just blew me off and didnt pay attention. Guess my big worry here would be HIV being the cause. I have had at least 2 tests since the last time I was put at risk for that which was many years ago. Also had a blood test that check variuos levels of stuff for my immune system and that came back perfect. I was diagnosed with celiac disease by one doctor and irritable bowl syndrome by another. So could those cause thrush?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Well, celiac disease can play havoc with your body and immune system if you’re still consuming gluten.

Or you could have something called candida, which is basically an overgrowth of yeast in the gut. That can cause ibs symptoms as well as oral thrush.

Your Questions About Thrush

George asks…

How can i get rid of vaginal thrush naturally?

I am 13 and i think i have thrush, i am really itchy downstairs and it burns when i pee. I wanted to know an easy natural way to cure vaginal thrush?????????????????? Help i don’t want to take medication and creams something natural is good!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

To the person who answered first, yes it is called thrush no matter where it is. And she said she wants natural, probably so she doesn’t have to tell her mum, because it is embarrassing i would know. I’m 14. Lol.

Usually these infections start by not washing downstairs properly.

Most women will experience at least one episode of yeast infection (thrush) in their lifetime. Unfortunately for many women yeast infections are on going and persistent and cause misery to the sufferers. Yeast infection is very common and is not to be confused with a STI infection. Thrush or yeast infection is caused by the overgrowth of a naturally occurring yeast Candida albicans.

Candida albicans is usually kept in balance by the body but certain conditions can cause the yeast to proliferate. Thrush usually affects the vagina and is a common cause of vaginal irritation. Thrush may also affect the mouth and anal area although this is less common. Many drugs to cure yeast infection are not without side effects but there are natural ways to help the body rid itself of this problem and prevent further episodes.

One of the best natural ways to combat Candida albicans is to use live natural yogurt. Live yogurt contains good bacteria which help to redress the natural balance in your body. Eat at least two pots of natural yogurt daily to attack the infection from the inside. Yogurt can be used a soothing cream – it can an be applied directly to the affected area to bring relief from itching. Soaking a tampon in natural yogurt and using it as a pessary is a natural way to ease the symptoms of vaginal thrush. Although live natural yogurts contain live bacteria, a more concentrated way to ensure a good supply of friendly bacteria is to take daily probiotic supplements which contain acidophilus or lactobacillus. A good quality probiotic supplement can be bought from a reputable health store.

Ensure a good supply of zinc in the diet. Deficiencies of zinc have been linked to yeast infections. Good sources of zinc include shellfish and dairyfoods. Alternatively take a daily zinc supplement.

Wear only cotton underwear which allows the skin to breathe. Synthetic materials produce a warm, moist environment allowing the Candida albicans yeast to proliferate.

Another holistic approach to curing a yeast infection is to use a safe homeopathic remedy. A new product available as a spray which is used under the tongue three times a day tackles the multiple symptoms and prevents the infection getting hold further.

Joseph asks…

If thrush is transmitted through milk then why is it ok to give baby the milk?

I exclusively pump and I got thrush and so did my son. Other mothers who have had thrush were told to pump and feed their children their milk as usual while treating the thrush. But since we don’t breastfeed, he got it through the milk, so shouldn’t I give him the milk that I froze from before I got thrush?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

You can’t give him your old milk – once you start the treatment you should only feed him freshly expressed stuff. Make sure both you and your baby get treated.
There’s a lot more to thrush than that though, especially in your special situation. Refer to kellymom.com for more info, and call your local LLL leader. IT’s free and they are very knowleadgeble about these things.

David asks…

How long does Nystatin take to cure thrush?

My 7 week old daughter has a mild case of thrush, it doesn’t bother her at all but she has white patches on lower/upper inner lips, inner cheeks, and back of the tongue. Today she has been prescribed Nystatin by her pediatrician. I am bottle feeding and have been steam sterilizing everything after each use. How long does it normally take for Nystatin to clear up thrush? We are supposed to finish the entire bottle of medication even if it goes away just to make sure it does not return.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

All three of my children had thrush when they were babies. Sometimes it clears up in a couple of days other times about a week. I guess it just depends on how badly your child has it and how they react to the medicine. Hope this helps.

Thomas asks…

How can I attract a thrush or thrush-like bird close enough to film it?

I need a shot of a thrush (only one or two seconds long) for a video project I’m making for school. I can film birds easily by standing very still next to a bird feeder with my movie camera, but I need the thrush to be on an ordinary tree branch, you know, a natural habitat. How can I get one to come close enough? I live in a wooded area in Connecticut, if knowing my location helps.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Make a pine cone bird feeder than put it in the tree. It will look very natural and the birds can’t resist it. Below is a link to the instructions for it.

Good luck

How long using clotrimazole before thrush symptoms disappear?

I self-diagnosed thrush on my penis recently, 2 weeks ago I started using clotrimazole cream once a day sparingly on the underneath of my foreskin. There used to be red speckles on the head of my penis, these are gone now, but the red patch is still there, it used to be a darker red colour but has faded a little, but I can see redness appearing on the other side of my foreskin. How long before these symptoms disappear?

Your Questions About Oral Thrush In Babies

John asks…

my baby is now 11 weeks old and still has oral thrush.?

since a few days after she was born she has had oral thrush. my health visitor says this is very common in breast fed babies. i have been back and forth to the doctors and used the prescriptions they have given and it still hasnt cleared. anyone had similr experience?how long will it take to clear?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

My baby had oral thrush from shortly after birth until she was about 5 months old. Because I was breast feeding, I had it too, so we went backwards and forwards to the doctor, with me in absolute agony. Nothing worked, despite trying numerous medications. In the end, the doctor decided to try the “silver bullet” which was Diflucan (which is contraindicated for breast feeding mothers). Two courses and the thrush was still completely rampant in both of us. In the end, I mentioned it to a friend who is a qualified herbalist and she recommended a homeopathic remedy, Arsenium Album. I took it and my baby got the benefit through my milk. Lo and behold but three days later no thrush in either of us and we haven’t had any since.

Although I am a little bit of a sceptic when it comes to some alternative remedies, this did seem to work. But I’m not really qualified to give advice on alternative medicine – I can only tell you that it worked for us. If you want to give it a try, speak to a homeopath or visit your local Holland and Barrett or health food shop. Most Holland and Barrett stores have qualified practioners who can give you advice on what might suit your symptoms best.

Joseph asks…

how do you Sterlize your baby bottles?

I boil my bottles and put then on the dishwasher rack to dry. My baby has oral thrush. So iam just trying to figure out a way to better sterlize my bottles. I was told thrush was caused by bacteria. Can I put anything in the water while sterlizing?? Tell me what you do. Thank you
My son is 4 weeks old so he does not share toys yet, I never reuse a bottle without boiling it first. I pump a bottle feed my baby so the hospital litterly gave me about 90 bottles to pump in so I have enough not have to reuse. I sterilize bottles every other day. Also I just got 11 of the Playtex ventsire bottles. So those I reuse before sterlizing. His pacifers I sterlize in his bottle warm. (Its has a seperate container for that) and I DO give him medician Nystatin. I have been giving him 1ml by syring 3 times a day. But from my previous post someone suggested I use a q-tip which is what I’m going to start doing today.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

The vinegar and water will help a lot when boiling. I would not use bleach on anything going in my baby’s mouth though. Also you can take a dry wash cloth and every time your little one is done eating wipe out his moth, on his tongueeinside of his cheek top of his mouth, under his tongue,Absolutely every where there is formula. And this will help drastically with the thrush. Trust i have 4children who all had this crap and finally realized that cleaning baby’s mouth of formulas of breast milk reduces the yeast left in it and BAM no more thrush. Gawd it is awfull…. Try it … Hope this helps

David asks…

Can Nystatin oral medicine for Thrush cause diarreah in a new baby?

My baby has had diarrhea since around the time she was about 10 days old and went to the doctor. who confirmed at that time she had thrush. but the diarreah hasn’t went away and the doc says Nystatin doesn’t cause diarreah. but i think the Nystatin is making my baby sick. and even something i read said tell the doctor if diarreah starts. My baby is now 5 days from being a month old and the diarreah still hasn’t went away. she was in the hospital for awhile and they said she just had gastrioentitis which is basically a big name for the flu. Her diarreah just won’t go away though. could it be the Nystatin medicine? even though the doc said it wasn’t? She quit for one day while she was in the hopital but as soon as they sent her home the next day the diarreah was back. I don’t know what to do. quit the medicine and let the thrush get worse or what?!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Yes the medicine can cause diarrhea. For my guy it caused really bad tummy pains and gas. Thrush is a fungal infection caused by an imbalance of the natural bacterias in the mouth or other parts of the body. If the thrush is mild (just a white coating) it probably doesn’t even bother the baby and as long as she is eating well you can stop the medicine. If she has sores though you may have to keep treating until it is gone.

You can also treat with gentian violet if you can find a pharmacy that still carries it. It takes about 6 weeks treatment and turns everything it touched purple and anything the babies drool touches purple and it doesn’t come out in the wash. However that is the tried and true method that has been used for generations.

Most babies outgrow thrush on their own. Please make sure you are sterilizing nipples and bottles and rings and pacifiers on a regular basis. If she is already sucking on her thumb you may want to introduce a pacifier so that you can keep it clean. If she gets a yeast infection on her thumb/hands it will be really hard to treat because she will just keep passing it back and forth. Also if you are breastfeeding or pumping you need to be treated as well. Hubby should also be treated since he may have thrush or jock itch and not know it and could pass it back.

We have decided since my boy only has a mild case we will let him outgrow it. He’s just over 3 months, it usually clears up around 6 months/with the introduction of solid foods. However if it doesn’t then we will consider the medication again.

Oral Thrush in Pregnancy?

I have always had a “geographical tongue” growing up, but it would come and go. The last week or so, my tongue has become increasingly sensitive and I have white patches all over the front of it. The roof of my mouth, all the way in the very back has also become very itchy. I used mouth wash and it burns like crazy! I also used peroxide and it bubbles & fizzes quite a bit. I cant eat anything with salt, the slightest bit burns! Even strawberries burn! Does this sound like Oral Thrush? I am 34 1/2 weeks pregnant. What could have caused this? How do I get rid of it? Will it harm my baby? Is this common in pregnancy? I never had this with my first. But then again, this pregnancy has been the complete OPPOSITE of my first. Any other ideas what it could be?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Thrush is very common in pregnancy. Many women experience an increase in vaginal yeast infections due to their pregnancies. To get rid of it, let your doctor know and they will write you a prescription.

Susan asks…

Mum and baby with thrush ?

Its horrible but both myself and my 4 week old son have oral thrush! I have it in my mouth and on my nipples- it is getting better in my mouth but nipples are still painful during feeding and sometimes sting. Bub only has oral thrush but it doesnt look as if its getting any better. We have both been taking Nilstat (Nystatin) on our 2nd refill prescription now for about 10 days now. What can i do to make my little man better and get rid of this horrible thing!
yes i was on anti-biotics for a week after i had the caesarian.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Nystatin doesn’t work that well because they have to add so much sugar to get a baby to take it. Also thrush/yeast can regrow in 90 minutes and you can’t use prescription meds that often.

Grapefruit seed extract works very well, and can be used in addition to nystatin (just not at the *exact* same moment, generally you skip the GSE the times you apply the nystatin).

Probiotics are always helpful.

And I don’t mean to scare you, but its not a good sign when an adult gets thrush in their mouth. Is your diet ok? Is it possible you have something serious like diabetes? Have you been on a lot of antibiotics? Steroids? Personally vaginal yeast infections, and on your nipples are one thing, but its rare in a healthy adult to get oral thrush. So I would be concerned if I had oral thrush.

Your Questions About Vaginal Itching At Night

William asks…

vaginal itching could it be from a blatter infection?

recently discovered ive a blatter infection i went to the doctor the second day after i noticed it they gave me perscription for it but i havent takein it bc my mom doesnt want me to instead shes haveing me take cranberry pills to get rid of it…anyways that was saturday and later on the night i started haveing minor itching from inside the next day i had a snotty like discharge and i was spotting so it looked discolored but my mom said that the texture of this discharge was normal and it only happened once the blatter infection seems to be going away but i still have vaginal itching it comes and goes through out the day. and im not sure what it is. im almost positive its not an std for the guy im with was a virgin when he got with me and hes hardly the type to even look at another girl let alone have an affair when hes with someone and the guy i was with before him when we split i got tested for everything across the chart and was negative for it all and havent been with anyone else after that except my current boyfriend soo what could this itching be??? should i be concerned?
cranberry is a naturl thing that DOES CURE blatter infections my mom is a doctor herself but HOMEOPATHIC which is SOOOOO much better then all the shit that goes into your system from regular doctor prescrtiptions!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Oh, my.

Generally, cranberry pills help to keep bladder infections away…not to treat them. Any infection will need antibiotics in order to cure it.

It’s not likely that vaginal itching would be related to a bladder infection. They’re both entirely separate organs, in separate systems.

Vaginal itching and unusual discharge can be symptoms of quite a few things. The most common diagnosis with these symptoms would be a yeast infection, which can come from a variety of sources. “Snotty like discharge” can be normal, but only if it’s normal for YOU. If something is coming out of your body that doesn’t ordinarily come out of it, it’s best to be checked by a doctor. Vaginal itching most definitely isn’t normal.

I’d say you should be concerned…not panicked, but concerned. I’d get it checked out, if I were you.

Paul asks…

19 weeks and severe vaginal itching!!(sorry if tmi)?

omg i don’t know what to do… for the past two weeks ive had the worst vaginal itching in my life.. i cant sleep at night or really do anything because of the discomfort!! i went to the er last week and said i had a uti.. so they put me on antibiotics.. but i noticed i started getting bumps all around my vagina and they itch really bad!!! they r flesh colored and hard….(don’t look like zits..) i don’t think its a yeast infection in sure they would’ve told me at the e.r… btw haven’t had sex since i got pregnant so it cant be from sex!! what should i do this itching is driving crazy…. it hurts really bad… tried using vagisil and it relieves the itching for like 2 hours then it comes back… what should i do.. i have my next Dr’s appointment on the 27th… should i wait till then or go there before? and what could it be is this normal in pregnancy?
it cant be an std because i got tested for stds the day i got tested for pregnancy… and i was clean except i was pregnant lol.
and ive only been with my husband! but i havent had sex since i got pregnant
i called my obgyn but they wont see me untill the 27th because i don’t have a primary Dr and i need a referral from him to be seen! does this sound bad enough to go to the E.R? i dont wanna just go there… and have then send me home,;.. without them doing anything

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

You should go in before your next appt. I am willing to bet it is a yeast infection when you get on antibiotics it wipes out all good and bad bacteria in your body and it makes it very easy to get a yeast infection or a bacterial infection. It is bacterial your doctor would need you give you a rx but for a yeast you can try a over the counter. I would try a 3 day dose before you go in to the doctor and see if that helps you out.

Mary asks…

Vaginal and anal itching pleas help?!?

Going to re ask this. For the past week and a half my anus area has been itching a LOT. It itches all day and all night and offten the area around my anus gets really red. Well this week the itching has now spread to my vagina. I have no vaginal discharge and I’m sure I don have jock itch because I have no fungus like growths on my skin. My skin is normal in color and only turns red when I scratch my itching. Sometimes it burns when i pee but not all the time. It’s only burned like once or twice. I honestly have no clue what’s going on. I also know it’s not an STD because I’m a virgin. Anyone have any clue what this itching is?! I don’t think it’s pin worms either because oddly enough the itching does not occur in my sleep. I did have a small open cut on the top of my butt crack inside my butt checks last week but it went away and has not come back. Could that cut have something to do with this?! This itching is non stop and I’m not even able to function at work because of it! I have to secretly scratch all day. Driving me nuts!!!!!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

You probably just have hairs growing down there. Nothing to worry about;D
or you could of shared sheets with someone who has genital crabs!

David asks…

Vaginal problems? (Not an STD)?

The symptoms are:
- I have a burning, itching pain inside my vagina, especially around the inner labia. The pain is focused around the inner labia, but it is really all over..the entrance to the vagina, the vulva, everywhere. It is bothersome, but when I scratch, it gets even worse and begins to sting. When it stings like this, it hurts to urinate.
- If I scratch like crazy, after an hour or so, one of my inner labia begins to swell and become really painful to the touch.
- My anal area also itches, but never stings or hurts. At first I thought it might be pin worms spreading to my vagina, but supposedly when you have worms, the itching intensifies at night, and in my case, at night the anal itching seems to get BETTER at night. (But the vaginal pain continues.)
- The skin inside is a bright red, but the anal area looks normal.
- I have a strange, thick discharge. It is whitish/grayish, but by the end of the day, there is thick crust of it in my underwear and it has turned yellow.
- There is no real odor down there. The discharge has no odor either, at least not a strong one.
- It is extremely painful to have sex, to the point of tears. We tried lubrication, as perhaps my vagina was too dry, but it hurts internally, deep in my vagina.
- It almost seems to get better when I shower or am on my period, but after the shower or period, it goes right back to stinging.

I have gone to the doctor many times, but we are all stumped. She has taken cultures to see if it’s bacterial or a yeast infection, but every time, nothing shows up.

It is not an STD. All of my partners have been virgins, and I have never had sex without a condom.

I almost think it is my birth control pill giving me constant yeast infections, but when the doctor does a culture, she finds nothing!

I have had to deal with this for almost a year and a half with no luck..please help.
I understand that whole “If a doctor can’t help” thing, but this has plagued me for a year and a half, and I’d do anything to stop it.
Maybe someone else on here has had the same issue in the past?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Do the yeast treatment and see if it clears it up. My bet is it will.

Betty asks…

Persitant Vaginal Itch?

Hi, I’m 5 months pregnant and have been dealing with vaginal itch for well over a week now. It all started when I had sex with my husband, and I know this is TMI kind of, but its necessary info. My husbands penis had a “soapy” smell to it although I dont know for sure if it actually was soap. Obviously I assumed it was soap and so I thought, hey whats a little soap on his penis going to do? He’s clean right? So we had sex and then the next day the irritation started. It was irritated at first and then it got irritated and itchy. My vagina was very red and inflammed. It was very uncomfortable for me throughout the day and at night. My vaginal secretions increased greatly and I was starting to think after about 3-4 days of this “oh my God, what if its an infection” so I went in and got checked out. I took a urine test, got swabbed vaginally, and all tests came back negative. The verdict was just disturbance, vaginal dermatitis. I was given some hydrocortisone and was sent on my way. Well, now its almost been two weeks. Although my vagina isnt inflammed anymore and the irritation is gone, there is still this annoying itch that still wont go away. Its weird because its on and off. Like My vagina wont be itchy at all, completely normal almost all day, but then all of a sudden i get a small itch, I rub it, and the itching persists but doesnt get much worse. Why am I still itchy? I’m wondering if my PH balance was thrown off by having sex with my husband that day. Ever since then, I’ve had this problem. I dont have any bumps, growths, abnormalities of any kind in my vaginal area. My husband is not a cheater, we are both completely faithful. Do any other women understand what I’m going through? Any idea’s as to what this is? I’m going to go in tomorrow and tell them about this, but I need some advice. Thanks for reading.
I drink nothin but water. No sodas or juice ever. The closest to “juice” I’ll drink every once in a blue moon is gatorade and thats only when I feel terribly dehydrated. As far as sweets go, I dont eat a lot of sweets either. I only eat sandwiches for dinner and if I do eat breakfast, its either a bowl of cereal or one croissanwich. So I know its not a sugar thing.
I dont have a yeast infection or vaginosis or any abnormalities, I went in and got tested.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

VAGINAL ITCHING

Vaginal itching may involve the area containing the external genital organs (vulva) as well as the vagina. Many women have occasional vaginal itching that resolves without treatment. Itching is considered a problem only when it is persistent, is severe, recurs, or is accompanied by a discharge that looks or smells abnormal.

Causes: Vaginal itching may result from the following:

• Infections:

Bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis (a yeast infection), and trichomoniasis (a protozoan infection) can cause itching (see Vaginal Infections: Introduction). These infections teHormonal changes at menopause can cause vaginal dryness, which leads to itching. Skin disorders such as psoriasis or lichen sclerosus can cause itching. Lichen sclerosus is characterized by thin white areas on the vulva around the opening of the vagina. I

Your Questions About Thrush In Adults

Thomas asks…

what is an home remedy to cure oral thrush for an adult woman?

my mother thinks she may have oral thrush what home remedy can she yse in the meantime till she gets in to see her doctor

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

“Treating oral thrush in healthy adults
If you’re a healthy adult with oral thrush, you may be able to control the infection by eating unsweetened yogurt or taking acidophilus capsules or liquid. Acidophilus is available in natural food stores and many drugstores. Some brands need to be refrigerated to maintain their potency. Yogurt and acidophilus don’t destroy the fungus, but they can help restore the normal bacterial flora in your body. If this isn’t effective, your doctor may prescribe an antifungal medication.”

As it says, just have some yogurt each day and pick up acidophilus capsules. I would also suggest using Salt water as a mouth rinse. If it isn’t Oral thrush or even if it is, salt water will help it.

Yes it is possible. I breast fed my baby when he had thrush. I didn’t know what it was either. I ended up getting it on my nipple. It felt like it was going ot rip off every time he nursed

I have adult oral thrush and am taking Nystatin but it’s not helping anymore…?

I went to the Dr. last wednesday and found out I have tmj (Temporomandibular joint disorder) I was in severe pain because My joint is stuck and now I need to have surgery done. The Dr. prescribed me some pain killers and muscle relaxers. The meds dried out my mouth really bad and I ended up with puss pocket at the roof of my mouth. I went back to the Dr. and he said I had adult thrush because of m meds. He prescribed me Nystatin and I am supposed to use it 4 times a day for 10 days. It helped get rid of all the puss pockets and redness t the roof of my mouth but now I have big bumps on the back of my tongue and ll over my throat and it burns really bad. I am still taking the Nystatin and eating a lot of yogurt which isn’t helping. Is there something I can buy at Walgreens or someplace without a prescription to help with the burning? It hurts to eat and drink. Please somebody help.I even called Walgreens and asked the pharmacist and he said to use orajel mouth rinse and when I did it burned even worse for bout 10min.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Whoa! First of all, are you sure you need surgery? I’ve had terrible TMJ for years and I see a chiropractor for it. He just pops it back into place, and the pain and “stuck” feeling vanish into thin air. No meds, no surgery, just a little adjustment. I’ve heard terrible things about jaw surgery – it’s extremely risky. Check out a chiropractor who adjusts extremities (like jaw, hands, feet), has good references, and a degree from Palmer.

Secondly, are you still on the meds that cause dry mouth? If so, try drinking lots and lots of clear water. Avoid fruit juice, dairy products, and sugar. Avoid anything that makes you the slightest bit stuffy-headed. Even oranges make some people stuffy. Take lots of vitamin C and garlic supplements. Take probiotic supplements – yogurt has some probiotics, but it’s dairy food, which isn’t good, and it doesn’t have a high enough probiotic concentration for what you need. Even if you’re off the meds, do all this stuff anyway.

Gargle with salt water at least three times a day. It should be mild and warm, not super-salty or hot. This will kill surface germs inside your mouth.

Stay on this course until you feel normal again. It sounds like you’re heading downhill, but you have time to stop. Check into some natural health care. I believe in balancing both holistic and traditional medicine and taking what’s best from both of them. It sounds like you’re getting the worst of it! Please take my advice, I have been through a similar experience and what I suggested is what helped me the most.

Mark asks…

Thrush in adult? Contagious ?

Hello, my 6 week old baby has thrush is it contagious? He is on antibiotics And is formula fed. I just looked in the back of my throat and have 4 lil white spots that look just like his thrush. I just started a steroid inhaler a2 weeks ago. Maybe is it something different. Can oral thrush go away on it’s own. Thanks

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Technically it is not contagious. Everyone has the organism that causes it. However, conceivably you could increase your own level of the organism by close contact with someone who has thrush, and so increase your own chance of getting it. Using an inhaled steroid seems to be one of the situations that could make you more prone to getting it. Breast feeding mothers can catch it from their babies and can get it on their nipples. For healthy individuals, yogurt (unsweetened) or taking acidophilus capsules or liquid may be advised. Mothers and infants who may be at a risk of developing the infection, will be treated so as to prevent the spread of the disease back and forth. Babies are sometimes prescribed with mild antifungal medication and mothers with antifungal creams.
