Your Questions About Vaginal Bacterial Infection

Laura asks…

I read somewhere that taking a large amount of folic acid can cure a vaginal infection?

There wasn’t too much information on the site, as though they didn’t want to give info to people without further studies being done. However, taking 1200 to 3600 mcg of folic acid supposedly cures bacterial vaginosis, and taking the daily recommended amout prevents it. Has anyone heard of this? Do you know how true this is?

I read on another site that large amounts of folic acid is not lethal, but has no benefit past 1000 mcg. Also, it mentioned that taking daily amounts over 1000 mcg could mask a B12 deficiency.
Alicia, thank you for your information on bacterial vaginosis, but I’m just curious about the supposed natural cure/prevention.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

I have never heard that, nor do I know anything about folic acid. But I can tell you one thing that will kill an infection and does it very fast, is cheap, not messy.

Most of the medicines on the market will take as long as 2-4 days to kill the infection, and some where in there it kills the pain and burning of the infection. The one I know will do the trick in a matter of hours.

Get you some Alka-Seltzer original, follow the directions on the package. You can take it every 4 hours. After you have taken your first dose, and the first time you have to urinate, there should be no burning. Keep on taking it every 4 hours. Before you go to bed, take another dose, by in the morning, the infection is gone. I always keep a box at my house on hand just in case an infection flares up on me. The first sign of it, I take a dose and it is gone within an hour.

Paul asks…

Please help. 17wks pregnant with thick, yellow, clumpy discharge. Yeast infection or something else?

I am 17wks pregnant from my lmp (which was 09/14/11). I was just diagnosed with a vaginal yeast infection. The doctor told me to use monistat 3 vaginal suppositories. Thing is I thought the discharge with vaginal yeast infections was thick white & clumpy. The discharge I’m experiencing is thick yellowish/brown & clumpy. Along with the discharge I am experiencing vaginal itching. Can vaginal yeast infections have thick yellowish/brownish clumpy discharge too. This is my 2nd pregnancy. My 1st pregnancy ended in miscarriage @ 5-6wks. I just want to get this taken care of. Has anyone else experienced vaginal yeast infection with discharge like mine. Or could it be a bacterial infection. I know vaginal bacterial infections can cause complications during pregnancy & I don’t want anything to happen. Thanks so much

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Sounds to me more like an STD. Every yeast infection I’ve ever had has been white and clumpy discharge, along with itching. Yellow/brown discharge sounds more like chlamydia or gonorrhea. I’ve also had BV and that didn’t have yellow discharge either. I’d get checked ASAP if I were you.

Thomas asks…

Vaginal Odor….please help :( ?

So… for about 3 months I have noticed that my discharge has smelt almost sweet like and is more chunky. I have noticed a change, so I know I am not crazy haha. I am 21 and I have had sex but not since I broke up with my bf over a year ago. I went to my dr. and she prescribed me vaginal bacterial infection medicine and it didn’t help so I went back to her and she did a full pap (which I had one done in june and everything turned out normal) and as well as a culture test and STD tests and everything came out normal…. not even an infection. Well, I know something is different and I am not sure if it is due to me drinking more alcohol then ever before or me starting to exercise frequently…. or what!? I asked her what I am supposed to do and she said nothing, well…. I don’t want to do nothing and trust me I shower and take really good care of myself (I have never even had a bladder infection/yeast infection or other genital issue). So any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

It could be an infection or just a normal discharge. I recommend visiting the site in the source for more info.

Mark asks…

How can i get rid of bad bacteria in my vagina, naturally?

I’m young and i have a fishy odor coming from my vagina. It has been there for a couple of months now. I looked on the internet and it said that I might have a bacterial vaginal infection. I dont want to go to a doctor, i just want to naturally get rid of it. By the way i do clean myself up down their by shaving. Do you think you can help me?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

This is natural. This is the smell of the bacteria that your vagina secretes which allows it to naturally clean itself. Unfortunately, it smells bad… But you probably shouldn’t use regular baby powder inside of the labia. Corn starch is similar to powder and would be safer to use. There are gynecologically tested wipes that you can use and special washes, but the smell will come back because it shoud. This is a good bacteria necessary to kill infectious intruders.

David asks…

bacterial vaginosis home remedy?

does yogurt work for vaginal bacterial infections also or is that just yeast infections? I really need to know as I am allergic to the medicine prescribed by my docotr. I need a home remedy for bactieral vaginosis…help please!!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Treating Naturally
- Eat or apply plain yogurt directly to the vagina. Alternatively, a tampon soaked in yogurt can be inserted.

- Garlic has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Garlic can be taken internally or can be applied directly on the vagina.

- Use calendula herb to reduce the inflammation.

- Herbs like tea tree oil, black walnut, Echinacea and goldenseal are effective in treating bacterial vaginitis.

- Use boric acid douche to acidify vaginal pH.

- Douche to reduce inflammation Add 12 tsp of calendula to boiling water, steep the mixture and cool it before use.

- Soak a tea bag in water and cool it in refrigerator and then apply it to the vagina.

Your Questions About Vaginal Herpes

Chris asks…

herpes or just vaginal infection?

a close friend of mine asked me for advice so im asking you all.
she has dry skin coming off her vagina and little like pimples. she it sheds and itches. idk what to tell her. the way she explained it was like eczema i dont know what to tell her. when she showed me the pic is just looks like a huge dry patch.with pimples

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Dry skin and itching on the outside often means a yeast infection. NONE of the symptoms you describe are typical o herpes.

An external yeast infection often causes dry, peeling skin, for example on the labia, soreness and/or itching and redness.

She could also have a bacterial infection – there are several possibilities but I would say that herpes was not the cause of those symptoms. When I had symptoms exactly like that – the doctor described it as looking like dermatitis – it was a yeast infection.

She needs to go to the doctor asap though. You just can’t be messing about with anything ‘down there’.

Lisa asks…

what does the vaginal discharge look like from herpes?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

I’ve never had discharge from a genital herpes outbreak. The sores can puss and have discharge, but not the vagina itself.

Some people can get discharge, but it’s not that common.

Helen asks…

Anyone living with genital herpes i would like some questions answered!?

Having genital herpes in penis or vaginal area how is the sex life? Is there even a sex life? How are relationships going with this condition? Have you lost a lot of friends from this or any lovers from this? 21 questions ha just very concerned about this! One last question Has it changed you as a person?
I read somewhere that condoms do not prevent the other person from getting herpes? Can a person with herpes have sex ONLY when they are not in their outbreak stage then its safe..? or is it still at risk? How will we know we are in are not in our outbreak stage? thank you so much for the help!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

CONDOMS DOES NOT PREVENT IT,,,,YOU ARE RIGHT AND AS LONG AS THERE IS NOT OUT BREAK AND/OR SORES PRESENT YOU SHOULD BE FINE. BUT REMEMBER YOU CAN STILL GIVE IT TO THE PERSON EVEN WITHOUT AN OUT BREAK BUT IT’S VERY RARE.

Michael asks…

vaginal pimples, genital warts, or herpes?

i have no idea what i have but theres like 2 small whitesihredish bumps and 2 even smaller ones like on the outside of my vagina kinda more close to my leg like where i normally shave. there like smooth and dont look disgusting there just kinda undesirable. i dont know whethere its just pimples from ingrown hairs from shaving or warts or herpes. any ideas of what they could be based on the description

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

If they are not painful I would say unlikely herpes, and most likely caused from shaving. But if you are not monogamous and having unprotected sex you maybe should get an STD check up to be sure.

Charles asks…

is it possible to transmit oral herpes from the mouth to the vagina?

Ive been to the doctor and they told me i have herpes of the mouth and they assured me that its completely normal and that most of the population has it and I was wondering that if it is possible to transmit that oral herpes of the mouth to the vaginal area while giving oral sex. Is it possible when its not active and what about when it is active?
But having oral herpes on the vaginal area is considered gentail herpes or oral herpes?
besides the location what else is different? Symptoms? Are the symptoms of Gentail herpes the same as oral herpes when its on the gentails?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

There are 2 types of herpes. Herpes 1 and herpes 2.
Herpes 1 is the one that people get on their mouth – cold sores
and herpes 2 is genital.

The 2 can be transmitted from one place to another but it is rare.

My boyfriend had a ‘cut’ on his mouth and went down on me and 2 days later i was breaking out in herpes down there it was THE most painful thing EVER. However i my tests came back saying i had herpes 1 so it was transmitted from the mouth. I think its pretty uncommon for this to happen though…. And to spread it.

The doctor told me it was very likely for me not to have another outbreak because its not ‘in the right place’

Your Questions About Vaginal Bacterial Infection

Laura asks…

What could be keeping a vaginal infection from going away?

Over the last 8 months, I’ve taken 12 medications, both prescription and over the counter, cream and pill. I’ve seen two doctors. All the tests I’ve had confirm it’s a bacterial infection. The current medication I’m on is a cream actually called Greer’s Goo, a mix of meds which includes a steroid. Some days it seems better, some days the same. It’s been a month. The doctor told me to try it for another month. What reasons could there possibly be for this? I’m really scared it’s more serious, and scared to think I’m running out of options. Any help is appreciated. Thanks (P.S. All STD’s have been ruled out…otherwise, I’ve always been a pretty healthy person, and I’m 27 years old).

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

If i is not effective, means 1). Treatment is wrong; OR 2). You had sexual contacts with infected partner during treatment); OR 3). Infection is not identified – read below

Helen asks…

What kind of vaginal infection is this?

It has a fishy smell, i’ve noticed that it looked like a creamy white substance but on my panty liner it was a yellowish discharge. i wanting to know if it bacterial vaginosis or trichomonias, even after i wash it still smells like it

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

No, it’s not normal. Both trichomonas and bacterial vaginosis(usually due to Gardnerella vaginalis) can cause a whitish-yellow discharge and odor. A fishy smell is usually associated with bacterial vaginosis. However, if there is any redness, itching, or irritation it may be a sign of trich. Either way, both conditions are easily treated with antibiotics but you have to go see your dr.

William asks…

I am currently recovering from a yeast and bacterial infection i took my pill for the yeast and am currently on precribed vaginal gel I will be done with my 5th application on wednesday…

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Id leave it s few days, I had thrush before and had to wait 2-3 days before i had sex again. You need to be careful because if the infection has bot gone and you have intercourse you may push the infection back into the vaginal area and your infection will soon come back and i know its really uncomfortanle and you will have to go ever longer without sex!!!

Its better to wait a few days (even a week) then rather having your infection come back!!

David asks…

Side Effects of Vaginal Cream??Help please…?

My doctor prescribed me Metronidazole Gel for Vaginal bacterial infection. I took my first dose 3 hours ago, and now I am suffering from severe cramps in my lower back and the back of my upper thighs are tingly. Is this Normal? or should I get myself to a doctor?? Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

That’s your body’s reaction to your immune system throughout the middle portion of your body going into overdrive to fight the bacteria, which means the cream is working. I suggest you get someone to massage your back for the cramping.

You may also notice a slight fever develop throughout your body over the next several hours. You should dress light (or not at all, if you’re in private) to dissipate the excess heat. It’ll be like a regular fever in that you’ll feel like bundling up, but that’s exactly the opposite of what will help.

Your Questions About Vaginal Infections

Sandra asks…

how do you get vaginal infections ?

any example please
i DONT want any more stupid answers, i dont want one im just curious and now i can no how to prevent them. thankyou to everyone for the answers :)

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

If you wipe your bottom after going number 2 and some of the stool gets by and your vagina. The fluid/moisture will help the bacteria enter. Or, during sex if there is bacteria/dirt present from dirty hands. Or, from anal sex if stool got in it because it was on the penis. Or, dirty underwear! Not every bit of dirt or uncleanliness casues infections however, your body is quite capable of fighting those germs off. Occasionaly however we can get an infection and plenty medicine is available even over the counter. A friend of mine gets them all the time. She is diabetic and very prone to get vaginal infections. I on the other hand have had maybe 2 in my 40 years. Children can even get them from bubble baths (can aggrevate ones own natural ability to keep the right balance) and to much sugar. Sugar feeds bacteria.

I am no expert but I hope I could help!

Sharon asks…

Can a hot tub cause vaginal infections?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

While a hot tub can cause infections, there are other things that are sometimes done in the tub that can cause the risk to increase dramatically! I warn against penetrational sex in a hot tub because the inward motion of the penis pushes the bacterial water into the vaginal area and can be quite dangerous! Sex in any standing water is not safe!

Robert asks…

Frequent or recurring skin, gum, bladder or vaginal yeast infections?

Frequent or recurring skin, gum, bladder or vaginal yeast
What does dat meann

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

NO it is NOT chlamydia! Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that needs a warm, moist environment to thrive.
Answer #2 had misinformation also.
It is possible to get frequent and reoccurring yeast infections on and in your body. Over all there are some people who are very susceptible to yeast infections just by what they eat. Yes, I said eat! Foods with sugar, flour, yeast and several other ingredients can and do make your “normal” body yeast over grow. Do a web search on “yeast free diets”. Follow the list very closely on what NOT to eat. If you do go to the doctor, ask him to check your blood for yeast.

Daniel asks…

Vaginal Infections: Is it me, or my boyfriend?

Me and my boyfriend of two years now have a long distance relationship. We only see each other about twice a month. However, every time I have sex with him, I come up with some kind of vaginal infection a few days later. We’ve both been checked, and do not have any STD’s. The most frequent infection I get is a UTI. I’ve had a couple bacterial infections, and now I have started getting yeast infections. Is there something wrong with my body that is causing all the infections, or could it be him? The UTI’s stopped when his doctor gave him the same antibiotic my family doctor gave me (cipro). But I am still having problems. This is my second yeast infection in the last two months. These infections always come up a day or so after we’ve had intercourse. We do not have anal sex (something I have been asked about since the yeast infections started). We do use condoms, and I am on the pill. My OBGYN is of no help, and if you’ve read my other question regarding female health, all she does every time I have a problem is tell me to lose weight…and frankly I think she’s full of it. Any insight anyone could give me is appreciated.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

As soon as you are done having sex get up and urinate. Not urinating after sex is what is causing the UTI

Richard asks…

Nuvaring and vaginal infections?

I was put on birth control to try to correct a hormone imbalance caused by PCOD. I’ve been using it for two weeks now and I think I have an infection. My discharge has gone back and forth between white with a bread-like odor and yellowish with a more foul-smelling odor. I have some itching and irritation and intercourse is somewhat painful. Is this common? Will it resolve after my next period or will I have to go back to the doctor and get some medication for this as well?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

You should go to your doctor so they can determine what is wrong and help you get better.

Find Fido’s smelly source

in my last column, I touched upon why some dogs have “doggy odor,” and explained there are a few normal or natural sources of odor in our canine companions. This week, I will explain a few possible abnormal or unnatural odors that might emit from our four-legged friends. Poor grooming of a dog with long, thick or matted hair can cause the haircoat to be a source of unpleasant odor. a coat that is not kept clean and groomed can trap dirt and other substances with odors and, if chronically wet, it can harbor bacteria and yeast. Some dog breeds just depend on people to keep their coats healthy and odor-free. for some pooches, regular grooming and clipping of the hair really helps. Skin diseases can cause abnormal odors on affected dogs. Allergy causes increased glandular secretions, and this creates a musty odor. they also can encourage yeast infection or bacterial skin infection, which produce odors. Dogs with seborrhea and dogs with deep skin folds (such as an English bulldog) are subject to secondary proliferation of bacteria or yeast on the skin surface as well. Ear disease is a common source of odor. the smell can be yeasty or actually smell like sewage. Anal sac disease or excessive anal sac production can cause a very musty, pungent odor. Anal sacs can become abscessed and produce an even fouler odor than normal. Anal sacs that do not empty normally might produce an abnormal pungent odor around the hind end. Dental disease or mouth ulcers can produce bad breath (halitosis). Dental calculus harbors numerous bacteria that produce the odor. Dental disease also can lead to excessive drooling, causing skin around the mouth to become infected, leading to more odor production. Flatulence can be a problem for some dogs. This, of course, is embarrassing to them, and they don't like to admit it is their fault. if this is a problem, it could be diet-related. trying an alternate dog food might help. As usual, if you believe your pooch has odors that bother you, check with your veterinarian. we can't always fix everything, but usually we can help make things better.

In The Following Paragraphs I Will Be Checking Out The 12 Hour Yeast Infection Cure « Stride Magazine

Studies have confirmed that 75% of women will buy yeastrol and suffer or has suffered from one kind of yeast infection in their life time. and for the most part ladies have always treated these issues using harmful drugs as well as other dangerous home remedies. One of these home made remedies is the usage of boric acid which is actually a poison and has actually caused death for some people. Also so you are aware, guys can also suffer from yeast infections, it is just more prominent in women. the 12 Hour Yeast Infection Cure is a method that claims to be able to help, and we will be checking out this program below.

This program doesn’t use harmful drugs to deal with your yeast infections, instead it is an all natural way to cure them. You need to recognize that many of the drugs available on the market for yeast infections can actually end up producing more harmful issues within your body. the reality is that there is a way to treat your yeast infection without having to use drugs, but the drug companies don’t want you to learn about it. This also comes down to a legal issue, as all the drug companies are required legally to provide a profit for all of their share holders. on the other hand there is actually no law on record saying that these drug companies need to create drugs that help people.

Whether you’ll be able to believe it or not many women have yeast infections but never realize that they have it. You could go to the 12 Hour Yeast Infection Cures site and see a listing of symptoms that could be from yeast infections. many of these symptoms tend to be mistaken for other issues. the list of symptoms are listed on their home page which means you don’t have to purchase their plan to find them.

Another thing you will learn with this program is how to treat the root cause of your yeast infection. more than likely many of you have made use of the prescription medications and found that a couple of weeks later your yeast infection is back, this is because these medicines only deal with the symptoms and not the cause. which describe why this program is so successful, you will be taking care of both the symptoms as well as the root cause of the infection.

In the event you end up checking out the website you may be surprised to see all the individuals who have been helped with this program, a lot of these individuals even sent in testimonials. and something that truly surprised me is that there are also testimonials from guys on their site. in case your suffering from yeast infections you should at least check out all the testimonials on their Internet site.

The system itself is selling for $29.95 and when you think of all the money you need to pay on the medications you could end up saving a lot of money over time. Yet another thing this program comes along with, that you won’t be getting with the drug companies is a 60 day money back refund policy. and when people add that kind of guarantee to a product you already know that they have complete faith in the results individuals will obtain from it.

Your Questions About Vaginal Bacterial Infection

Charles asks…

Yogurt and bacterial infections?

I have read on here that you can use yogurt to help clear up vaginal bacterial infections. Is this true? If so, do you eat the yogurt or actually put it in your vagina? May sound stupid but I’m curious….

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

You can do either with it…eat it or put it right in there.

Linda asks…

Mastitis after vaginal infection?

Hello. I am three weeks postpartum, delivered twins vaginally in July! This was my second pregnancy. I have since developed a bacterial infection vaginally. My doc prescribed Metronidazole for that, and two days later I had a horrible fever and chills all night long (which I thought was a side effect of the Metronidazole) and my right breast was horribly red and really sore! I also had a cramp in the right side ovary. I went back to the doc, for the ovary pain (thinking the breast thing would resolve itself I stupidly didn’t mention it to him). He thought I had a secondary infection in the uterus and gave me Augmentin to take along with the other I am taking. It has been 36 hours and my breast is still really red and sore. I don’t know what to do! I am worried that it may lead to sepsis?? Or should I not be worried since I am taking augmentin? It is the weekend, so I can’t call my doc again. I haven’t had a recurrence of fever or chills. Was the fever just a symtom of Mastitis?
Should I go to the ER and have blood work done? Or should I just calm down and see if the two antibiotics work?
Thanks!!!!!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Youre not likely to get sepsis from mastitis. I would call your ob/gyns office. They should have an emergancy number to call, like on the recording. Depending on the size of the practice, there may be someone on call to answer your question. Try giving that a crack first.

Call your doc. They usually have an exchange that will get info and questions to him or they can get you in to see someone who is taking his calls. At the very least call the ER and see it they think you should be coming in to see them. Why be in pain and possibly let an infection get a foothold in your body. It may be nothing, probably is. But why chance it?

James asks…

Could my boyfriend keep giving me vaginal infections because he’s having sex with the same women as before?

I need some very intelligent answers please. My boyfriend and I have been together for 7 years. I kicked him out about 3 years ago but he didn’t have money for a place to live so he shacked up with another women(I didn’t know this at that time I found out a year later) He was only with her for 3 months and then I asked him to come back home. The whole time we didn’t live together he would stop over for sex. A quickie because he had moved to another city and would tell me he didn’t have much time to stay he still worked in my town and had to get back to his place because he said he had another job in his new town. I started getting vaginal bacterial infections. I would get them cleared up but then it would come back for the three months we were apart. After all the years we have been back together he has a new job in the town he lived with her at. Now I have been getting the infections back.Do you think it is just a coincidence or is he seeing her again? It just seems suspecious.
Could I just be worried and imagining it because he lied about her before and I never really trusted him as much as I should have? Should I be following him after work to see if he is going there for a quickie now and telling her the same story? There are women who don’t take care of themselves and spread stuff. She’s most likely the type.
I already did get checked out. It is was vaginal Infection and I cleared it up once again 3 weeks ago and now I have another Dr. appointment because of the same symptoms. I take care of my body.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

What you describe is certainly possible. In conducting the harbor infections that do not affect them but they pass them on. This is extremely true especially in diseases like HPV were males have no symptoms at all but the same infection in women causes cervical cancer and genital warts…. Unfortunately many men carry this virus without knowing it only women have a vaccine for that has just become available this year.

Other lower grade infections can occur because of changes in the pH (acid or alkaline) or flora of your vagina. These can lead to different types of infection. You did not say if you are using a condom… I suspect not. I think you’re going to have to tell him that after you get checked out and given an antibiotic or what ever to clear the infection he needs to wear one every time and then see if you get any infections. If none occurred then it would certainly point to him as the source. Of course the stress of the warring about this does not help things either.

Question about getting rid of a vaginal infection?

my doctor told me i have a minor bacterial infection (bacterial vaginitis or whatever its called) i feel a little uncomfortable because of the discharge. i have never had an infection before besides a yeast a long time ago. so my question is, what is better, to treat it orally with pills or use the cream that u insert every night? she gave me a choice and i want to know if theres a certain one that works better? also- is this contagious, like did i pass the infection to my boyfriend if we had sex? can he pass it back to me once im done with the medication? i only have one sex partner and its been this way for a while.
please no rude answers just some advice. thanks

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Personally, i would recommend the pills

No, you didn’t infect him but make sure he pays attention to his personal hygiene as it may have been him that introduced the bacteria

Your Questions About Vaginal Infections

Mark asks…

Why do I constantly have infections (tooth, vaginal, and UTIs), & haven’t had my period in 6 months?

I am 24 yrs. old & I have recurring bacteria vaginosis, tooth infections, 2-3 UTIs annually, am always fatigue & lack energy to preform daily tasks, experience poor concentration, periodic fainting and my menstrual cycle ranges between 90-180 day intervals. What could possibly be wrong with me! PLEASE HELP!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Sounds to me like you’ve got a hormone problem–thyroid problem is the most likely as it’s the most common. The thyroid regulates your metabolism so if your thyroid is low you feel tired, can’t concentrate, and your immune system isn’t great. It also causes your periods to stop because the thyroid helps to regulate the ovaries. Another possibility is an adrenal problem. You need to see an endocrinologist, who will do tests on you and figure out which of those problems you have. They are pretty easily fixable by taking hormones, which are not expensive, either. Good luck!

Symptoms of low thyroid:
Fatigue
Weakness
Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight
Coarse, dry hair
Dry, rough pale skin
Hair loss
Cold intolerance (you can’t tolerate cold temperatures like those around you)
Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches
Constipation
Depression
Irritability
Memory loss
Abnormal menstrual cycles

symptoms of low adrenal function:
chronic, worsening fatigue
muscle weakness
loss of appetite
weight loss
Other symptoms can include:
nausea
vomiting
diarrhea
low blood pressure that falls further when standing, causing dizziness or fainting
irritability and depression
a craving for salty foods due to salt loss
hypoglycemia, or low blood glucose
headache
sweating
in women, irregular or absent menstrual periods
Decreased libido

can antibiotics cause vaginal infections?

i was taking antibiotics because the doctor thought i had strep throat but turns out i had mono, so the antibiotics went backward on me and caused a rash all over my body. now im experiencing vaginal mucus that is white and this is embarrassing but the inside has some white stuff and its very itchy down there and uncomfortable i was supposed to get my period the 27th and its already the 5th whats wrong with me?
thank you for all the help!
no i am not on any birth control pill i’m only 16 years old. im just concerned because i haven’t had my period in over 35 days and i have that mucus coming out

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Yes, antibiotics can cause yeast infections because it kills natural bacteria that helps keep everything tidy! I was taking Ampicillin for acne and had to take probiotics every day, or eat lots of yogurt. It helps. You can buy probiotics from your local grocery store.

Linda asks…

Vaginal infections qustion?

This girl I am dateing now has a Vaginal infection before she meet me… what do i need to know. can i get somthing from her?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Vaginal infection could be many things. It could be any disease involving the vaginal area. Obvious if she has herpes in that area, yes you could get that. A male can get a yeast infection from a female but only if you had sex with her while she had it. I dont know what girl would want to have sex with a yeast infection but I guess they do. Http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/male-yeast-infection/HO00172

If its bacterial vaginosis male partners do not need to be treated.

Also if a girl had Chlamydia and you had sex while she had it then you could get it or if she got treated but it was not completely treated you could get it. Then you would need a medicine to cure it, an antibiotic I believe.

You can also get gonorrhea if you have sex with a female who has this or was not completely treated for this. Treatment for this is an antibiotic.

Its best to get checked for STDs and STIs before sex with new partners.

Joseph asks…

Can you use over the counter vaginal suppositories for yeast infections while pregnant?

I am 14 weeks pregnant and I have a very bad yeast infection that i believe came from an antibiotic that was prescribed to me,,, i bought some Miconazole but I’m just curious as to if you can take it while pregnant

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

-Eat yogurt. It contains helpful bacteria (live cultures, including acidophilus and bifidus) that destroy yeast. It also works when applied topically. Insert some into the vagina using a finger or plastic tampon applicator. Use only plain yogurt with active cultures.

-Take lactobacillus/acidophilus supplements. Use according to the directions on the bottle.

-Douche with a solution of 1 to 3 tbsp. Vinegar in a quart of water. Repeat once a day while having symptoms, but no longer than a week.

-Decrease or eliminate sugar and sugary foods. Sugar promotes yeast growth.

-Use a garlic clove as a suppository. Garlic contains a natural anti-fungal agent. Peel a fresh clove, wrap it in gauze and insert it into the vagina.

-Try gentian violet. It’s a traditional remedy for yeast and other infections, and can be found in pharmacies. Swab the area with it once or twice a day. Make sure to use a thick pad – it stains everything.

-Use an herbal douche. Combine equal amounts of sage, raspberry and comfrey with 1/4 part goldenseal. This can be combined with cider vinegar.

-Use an over-the-counter yeast infection remedy. Apply as directed.

I found an excellent article on this website about how a woman with yeast infections finally beat it — http://bit.ly/2C9wfG

David asks…

do any vaginal infections delay a period?

i was supposed to have my period 3-4 days ago and i havent had it…. but my vagina really itches, smells, and i have white discharge…? or am i pregnant?? i dont know how i could be because every time my boyfriend and i have sex he wears a condom and pulls out before he cums…! so any tips or help!! im freaking out im 18 i cant be pregnant!!!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Could be a urinary tract infection, I don’t know how they may affect a period but I had one not too long ago. Your urine/vagina may have like an “ammonia” like odor and some stomach pain. Believe me more than likely you have a UTI go to your gyno or doctor and they will prescribe you some antibiotics, sounds like you and your boyfriend are pretty safe with the sex so I wouldn’t stress over it too much (pregnancy is always a possibility but to me, I doubt it)

Your Questions About Vaginal Herpes

James asks…

Does herpes give you a cold and stinging vaginal lips?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Ok, first of all…ignore the other guy…this is a sensitive issue, he’s being insensitive…the only way you can positively check for herpes is if you notice a lesion (sore or otherwise) on or around your genitals. Herpes lesions start as bumps that become swollen and inflamed, break open, release fluid, and then dry up and disappear, much like a cold sore. If you see this happening go to a doctor as soon as possible and have a viral culture done…and I’m talking soon…the longer you wait the longer the lesion has to heal…as it heals its viral properties will decrease, meaning a viral infection may not be detected the closer it gets to being completely healed. If you don’t ever see a lesion but you are sure that you have had a sexual encounter with someone who is herpes positive, get a blood test done. These are not as accurate as an active culture, but they do detect antibodies that the body creates to fight the virus. They are accurate enough to detect these antibodies within a few weeks to a few months depending on the person…I’ve heard to wait 12-16 weeks after possible infection to test…these are the only ways to really know, best of luck to you!

Helen asks…

Causes of vaginal cuts besides herpes?

I am still waiting for herpes test results, but the doctor said it doesn’t look like a typical herpes outbreak. I had a small paper cut type sore in my perineum (area between anus and vagina) that healed with neosporin. Today I noticed another cut on my outer labia that looks like a little red slit. It stings and the whole area down there inside my outer labia is very red and sore. I had multiple sessions of rough, dry sex about a week and a half ago but I didn’t think the area would still be irritated from it. What could be causing this?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

It could be general cuts caused by things like shaving, scratching or rough sex (I’ve stretched/cut the area between my vagina and anus via sex several times before. It definitely feels like a paper cut.). It could be manifestation of an allergy to something like laundry detergent or soap. It could be caused by some sort of infection – whenever I get a yeast infection, I get rash-like sores that sometimes look like cuts.

Those are the things I think of immediately that could be causing this, other than an STI. It’s good that you went to the doctor and got tested, though. Best of luck!

John asks…

If one has had a tubal, has vaginal warts and herpes..how much are they at risk of geting cervical cancer?

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

The tubal does not matter in the case of cervical cancer.
Check out what kind of HPV/ herpes you have
the type matters.
16 and 18, and some other lesser prevalent subtypes are much more likely to convert to cancer.
You can treat the warts, and suppress the herpes.
The warts are the main worry in cancer. Continue getting yearly paps to make sure you don’t end up with cancer.

Michael asks…

Is it possible to have a vaginal birth if you have genital herpes?

I have had herpes since May 2005 and have maybe 1 outbreak after the initial outbreak and that was in about 06/early 07. During my pregnancy I have not had ANY outbreaks, is it possible for me to still have a vaginal birth?
Thanks to all your answers so far! I am just paranoid about passing any type of infection on to her. My only concern is my mom never knew I contracted the disease and if I have to have a csection I cant think of anything on why to tell her I need to have the csection done!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Yes, very definitely.

In a UK study of neonatal herpes across the UK, all cases of neonatal herpes were in babies born to mothers who had caught genital herpes in the last three months of pregnancy. No woman who had caught herpes prior to the pregnancy passed it on to her baby – even the women that were experiencing outbreaks at the time of the birth. And bear in mind in the UK they don’t prescribe antivirals before the birth.

You can take something like valtrex in the four weeks prior to the birth to minimise the risk of you having an outbreak too. If you did have one when in labour, they would give you a c-section.

My sister has genital herpes, she caught it a few months before getting pregnant with her first child, and has given birth to three children vaginally since then with no problems at all. And she wasn’t offered valtrex either since we live in the UK.

You will be fine.

And if you do experience an outbreak and have to have a c-section, there are plenty of reasons for a c-section other than herpes – position of the baby, baby in distress etc, so you don’t have to tell anyone.

Daniel asks…

Dr. diagnosed me with genital herpes, now I’m experiencing vaginal bleeding although I have an IUD?

Lately I have been having painful urination and it hurts to touch my vaginal opening. Yesterday I went to the doctor and tested negative for all stds, however I have one sore that seems to be herpes. The results have yet to have been confirmed.
Well, yesterday before going to the appointment, I woke up with slight vaginal bleeding (a period?).
Now, after being put on acyclovir for genital herpes, I have absolutely no idea what to expect. I am devastated that I allowed myself to be put in a position to have acquired HSV.
If any one has experienced a primary herpes outbreak please let me know what to expect.
I would also like to know if the vaginal bleeding is something I should be concerned with. Again, it is not heavy and does not cause me heavy cramping. I have had the Mirena IUD since march of 2009.
Thank you.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

You shouldn’t be having bleeding with herpes, unless you picked at the sores. Herpes affects every one that gets infected with it differently. Some people have very little symptoms while others get all the classic symptoms of an initial out break. But the usual symptoms are burning when you pee, painful itching, and or, burning and or tingling symptoms occurring around the site of the out break, sores or raised clusters of fluid filled blisters. Out breaks can last any where from 1-3 weeks depending on severity and treatment.
The bleeding could be a reaction to the medication (if you have some kidney damage) or it’s time to take the IUD out for your period. But if your period is regular and it’s not time for your period to come, then this may be some thing to be concerned about.
Try not to feel ashamed or devastated, some people out there are infected with herpes and don’t even know it. It’s a risk that comes with having sex. It happens but over time things do get better. Herpes does nothing to your health accept cause irritating sores once in a while.

Your Questions About Vaginal Herpes

Joseph asks…

How Can you get Finger Herpes?

I was wondering if you are fingering somebody and they have herpes in there vaginal area or anywhere else will you get it? How will you know if someone has herpes if you don’t see anything on their mouth or anything. And I was looking on this other question and they said herpes can get really bad when you are biting you nails. And if that person is sexually active then should I stay away from him/her? Can someone please tell where you get herpes fingers, face etc. & What can cause herpes between two people. PPLLEEAASSEE HHEELLPP MMEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

Possibly but not likely. If you had cuts on your cuticles at the time you fingered her. Finger herpes (herpes whitlow) is usually caused by HSV1. It can be transmitted when you often stick your fingers with cuts on the cuticles, into some ones mouth who has an out break of cold sores.
You would be more likely to get herpes if you had regular sex with them.
You wouldn’t know if some one has herpes, unless you see an out break on them. If they are willing to have sex then they most likely won’t have an out break. It’s some thing you have to trust some one to tell you, or you could ask them. You should know herpes whitlow is not common to have.
If you all ready had herpes on your fingers (herpes whitlow) then I suppose biting your fingers when there is an out break could make it worse.
There is no reason to stay away or be friends with some one who has herpes. Herpes is transmitted through skin to skin contact like kissing, having oral sex or regular sexual intercourse with them. Or if you stick your fingers in their mouths while they had an out break of cold sores.
The more common places to get herpes is on or around the mouth (oral herpes HSV1), or the genitals (genital herpes HSV2). You can also get herpes in your eyes (ocular herpes) but this is also not common, herpes can also occur on the fingers. It’s rare to have herpes away from those places of the body but it can happen if you do wrestling or some close contact sports with people that have cold sores. Sorry to be long but hope that helped.

Mark asks…

Vaginal rash during pregnancy, looked like herpes?

When I was prego w/ my son a long time ago I developed a rash in my vaginal area (the pink area, can’t remember if it was on the outter area or now). I swear it looked exactly like herpes. The way it developed was exactly like I read herpes does (starts as a bump, turns into a ‘blister’, errupts, then looks kind of like a crater then scab) and I had tons w/ in a day (happened suddenly). Incredibly painful.

I had gone to the emergency room as I was around 5 mo prego. They did a blood test and a culture. Both were negative for herpes virus. Even the doc at the ER thought it was herpes. They could not figure out what it was, gave me antibiotic and told me to follow up w/ my doc.

It was gone after taking the antibiotics for a few days. My doc did a blood test for herpes cuz I insister. Negative.

Any idea what else this could have been? I looked up some of the common pregnancy related rashes and none of them look close (even the ones w/ ‘herpes‘ in the name).

Any clue?

I am prego again and want to look out for this as I do not know what it was.
This was 9 years ago. No my partner at that time did not have herpes, I was with him for 10 years and he was tested 2 years ago.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

I had this exact thing happen to me in february.

I was also tested for herpes since that what it looked like – negative test.

I did test positive for Group B Strep and had to go on a round of strong antibiotics to get rid of it.

I found out that I had developed a secondary infection relating to the Group B that is similar to impetigo (i think that’s how its spelled).

It was the most painful thing that I’ve ever experienced in my life and now that I’m 5 months, I’ll have to go on antibiotics again when I deliver so that I don’t have complications with the Group B.

George asks…

Vaginal Red Sores-Herpes or not?

This is really embarrassing to even ask and talk about but..I have this red sores inside my vagina easy to see when the skin is pushed back at the entrance. I had a test done years ago to see if they were herpes (because my gyn claimed it was in my head she saw nothing but didn’t bother to fold the skin back). the test was a blood test. The sores have been there for years and are getting a bit bigger now. I had the test done like over 4 years ago. I’m not sure if it’s herpes because the blood test came back negative AND these sores have NEVER gone away, popped open or anything. As far as pain, they hurt a lot when inserting a tampon because they get rubbed by the applicator. the pain is a real bad burn sensation.

I just want to know what test I should get to see wtf these are or if anyone knows what other vag sores there are besides herpes that would be red and don’t go away. I need to get another test but I want to narrow what I get tested for because I have no insurance now.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

The only way you’re going to know for sure is by getting tested for herpes. If the doctor told you that then you should see a different doctor and tell them where you saw the sores so they can properly examine and test you. Thrush and trick can also cause sores but I don’t think they hang around for years on end either.
Herpes break outs usually last for about 1-3 weeks and they can be very pain full. They don’t usually hang around for years but they can cause uncomfortable or pain full itching, burning and or tingling symptoms. It can take a while for antibodies to show up in a blood test, I think you should get tested for herpes again. Some times you don’t get results until after a break out occurs.

Sandra asks…

There’s redness around my dogs vaginal area. Has she got herpes?

I care for my dog greatly and would like to know what is wrong with her.

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

If it is Herpes it would be on her vulva. It would look like little blisters. The whole area wouldn’t be red. She may be coming into heat. If she does have herpes, it is no big deal. People on purpose expose their dogs at dog shows so that the mother is immune. But if she happens to have an attack at the time she is whelping the pups will die unless you can keep them at like 100 degrees for I think 3 weeks. Most dogs are carriers and don’t usually have a problem. One of my girls had it, and I decided not to breed her because it was fairly noticeable, and I couldn’t stand the thought of losing a litter! However, if you breed the dog again, for some reason the pups will be fine. She maybe licking back there because of anal gland problems. If she is spayed, I would take her to the vet. If not it is her season probably.

Linda asks…

Vaginal itching, sores on tongue, and a cold: Could this be herpes?

I have had sores on my tongue for about the past week. (exactly like when u bite your tongue and its sore the next day), then 2 days ago i started getting vaginal itching. I thought nothing of either then i suddenly realised that i have had a cold for the past 3 days and i had a bit of a panic that this may be the herpes virus.
I have no sores around the vaginal area though.
Could this be herpes?
i had sex with someone new 3 and half weeks ago, but used a condom.
im now havin a bit of a panic so any help would be good!!
thanks

Tara Lewis (Admin) answers:

That is deffinitely not herpes with sores on your tongue and your vanginal area iching, that could be something serious. I have herpes and never heard of such. Only time I hear about people with sores in there mouth is with full blown aids. Which I doubt you have but go see a doctor.
