Do you really need a tongue scraper?

Just use a normal bar of soap and warm water as soap works best in warm conditions, says Dr Cutler. Rub your hands together for 20 seconds, rinse, then dry them thoroughly. if you leave your hands damp, this enables bacteria left on your hands to flourish.

London – most of us are keen to preserve our health and when a new product comes on to the market that claims to do just that, the temptation can be great.

But which of these are true health essentials and which are just hype, destined for the back of the bathroom cabinet?

A recent report in the Drug And Therapeutics Bulletin claimed that even insect bite creams – a staple of most people’s first aid box – are a waste of money. The researchers said there was little evidence these products work and suggested people use a cold flannel to treat a bite instead.

Here, we look at other popular products to see if they are worth buying – and the simple, home-made alternatives that work just as well.

These plastic hand-held devices are marketed as a way to keep the mouth clean and the breath fresh. most have a circular loop on the end that you drag across the tongue to remove the furring – debris and bacteria – that may build up there.

“They aren’t really necessary,” says Professor Damien Walmsley, science adviser to the British Dental Association.

“There are a number of different causes for bad breath, such as having a dry mouth – which allows bacteria to concentrate around your teeth – or not cleaning and flossing correctly, but having a dirty tongue is not high on the list.”

What to use instead:

“for most people, brushing the teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day to remove any bacteria around the tooth or the gum line will be enough to keep the mouth fresh,” says Professor Walmsley.

If you really want to de-fur your tongue then gently run your toothbrush over it after brushing, he adds.

“Double dose” or “high dose” vitamin C tablets are a common sight on the pharmacy shelves. Vitamin C is needed to keep cells and connective tissue healthy.

Adults need around 40mg a day but many supplements contain 1,000mg or more, and some people take them believing they will maximise their chance of fighting off colds and other infections.

“The problem is that the body cannot store vitamin C so taking extra does not give any benefit – it will just get passed out of the body in urine,” says Neal Patel, of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

“In fact, in 2007 the respected Cochrane Collaboration reviewed the evidence from 29 trials involving more than 11,000 participants and concluded that vitamin C does not reduce the incidence of colds in most people. Therefore, taking high doses as a preventative measure was not justified.

“although it is an essential nutrient, vitamin C does not stop you getting a cold.”

The Department of Health recommends that only children aged six months to five years need take supplements due to smaller appetites and fussy eating habits.

What to use instead:

Eat a diet with a variety of fruit and vegetables. An adult can get the recommended daily amount of 40mg from one medium-sized orange.

ALLERGY LIGHT PROBES

Costing in the region of £30 (about R360), light probes consist of two probes which are inserted up the nose and emit a red light at a special frequency. this is said to help overcome allergic rhinitis – an allergy to, for example, cat hair, pollen or dust mites that leads to sneezing and a runny nose.

The idea is that you insert a probe in each nostril for around five minutes a few times a day. It’s claimed the light affects the metabolism of the cells in the nose, slowing down the immune response and reducing the release of histamine, the chemical that triggers allergic type symptoms.

“I have been dealing with allergic rhinitis for more than 20 years and I cannot see anything about these that would indicate they would work,” says Dr Adrian Morris, a specialist at the Surrey Allergy Clinic.

“They do claim to have trials that show they are effective but I would think there is probably a big placebo effect. these would not affect the release of histamine and even if they did, the effects of these probes would, at best, be local to where the light is shining.

“There are lots of nooks and crannies up the nose – the sinuses are like a system of caves – and I don’t see how shining a light in one spot could desensitise the whole area to an allergen.”

What to use instead:

“Antihistamines are effective – and if, in the case of hay fever, you take them early in the season, before the symptoms start and regularly, then they will work,” says Dr Morris.

“The other alternative is a nasal filter. these are like tiny corks that you put up your nose that contain a small filter to prevent allergens getting into the nose.”

BATTERY-POWERED TOOTHBRUSHES

These promise extra cleaning power with more convenience than an electric toothbrush, which needs to be kept charged by the mains.

“The problem is that they don’t have enough power,” says Professor Walmsley. “An electric toothbrush will give a more thorough brush.” The other issue is that as the battery starts to run down, the power will fade, but not enough for you to notice it, meaning you don’t clean as well.

What to use instead:

A hand-held toothbrush used correctly is just as good as a battery-powered one, says Professor Walmsley.

“I always say it’s not the cost of the toothbrush that matters, it’s how you use it.

“however, studies show that an electric toothbrush with a round head that works with a rotation/oscillation effect [where the brush head spins a quarter-turn in one direction, then a quarter-turn in the other] is slightly better than a manual one.”

There is no doubt that hand washing is an important way of insuring yourself against illness. Many of us fork out for antibacterial soaps or hand gels that can be used without water, which claim to contain antibacterial agents that kill germs.

“when you wash your hands it is the detergent action of the soap and the agitation of rubbing your hands together that is most effective at removing dirt and cleaning your hands,” says Dr Ron Cutler, director of biomedical science at Queen Mary, University of London. “And so you don’t really need to use antibacterial soap.”

Furthermore, antibacterial gels without water generally won’t help to dislodge the dirt, he says. “And in the case of something like colds or norovirus – the cause of the winter vomiting bug – these are viruses and not bacteria so can’t be eradicated by antibacterial products.”

What to use instead:

“Just use a normal bar of soap and warm water as soap works best in warm conditions,” says Dr Cutler. “Rub your hands together for 20 seconds, rinse, then dry them thoroughly. if you leave your hands damp, this enables bacteria left on your hands to flourish.”

Body washes have become popular among women as a way to deodorise and keep clean – some are also marketed as a gentler way to wash as they maintain a healthy pH balance, unlike soap.

However, not only are these not necessary, but they could do more harm than good.

“The inside of the vagina naturally has some bacteria but if you wash these away you create an imbalance,” says Dr Hugh Byrne, a consultant gynaecologist at the Lister Hospital in south-west London.

“Without these bacteria to keep their numbers in check other organisms such as the yeast that lead to thrush can then take hold. these products are pretty pointless.”

What to use instead:

“Just wash the external surrounding skin on the upper part of your legs as you shower or bath but don’t worry about doing any more than that,” says Dr Byrne. – Daily Mail

Your metamorphic vagina

It’s long been known that there’s a delicate balance of bacteria that inhabit the human vagina, but researchers have found that this tiny ecosystem varies from person to person and can even abruptly change from moment to the next with little negative impact or disease.

While fungal disease such as thrush does occur when there is an imbalance in this ecosystem, it’s not so much because of a lack of one or another microbe as it is the balance in pH.

Study researcher Larry Forney of the University of Idaho told LiveScience that five major groups of bacteria live in the vagina – one of the most important of which is the Lactobacillus species which plays its part in keeping the pH balance in check.

A vagina’s pH balance sits at 4.5 – about the acidity of tomato juice.

Bacteria thrive in their billions all over our bodies and offer major benefits to human health including in our digestion and on our skin. in fact, scientists have found that messing with these little creatures can cause diseases such as obesity, depression and infection.

Forney and his research team discovered that the type of bacteria living in a woman’s vagina actually changed over time.

The scientists analysed bi-weekly swabs taken from the vaginas of 32 participants over a period of 16 weeks, taking into account day-to-day activity that each woman recorded in a diary.

They found that the type of microbes colonising the vagina were dependent on factors such as menstruation or sexual activity or sometimes for unknown reasons. While some women’s vaginal ecosystems weren’t affected by their monthly bleed, scientists saw a major change in the types of microbes that might thrive over this time only to be replaced by another type as soon as the bleeding ended.

This research suggests that “conditions” such as bacterial vaginosis which is cited as a change in bacteria in the vagina that causes unusual discharge, itching and unpleasant smell, might often be misdiagnosed, particularly as many of those women who are told they suffer from it have none of these symptoms. their doctors most likely draw this conclusion when they notice a change in the bacteria, choosing use antibiotic treatment.

“We think that women are probably in most cases able to modify these changes and get back to what their normal status is and that they shouldn’t be treated [if they don't have symptoms],” gynaecologist William Ledger told LiveScience.

This finding is important as overuse of antibiotic can lead to drug-resistant bacteria.

While microbes might change over a women’s life and through her cycles, their essential functions seem to stay the same, suggesting that there is no cause for alarm.

Still, Forney and his team have yet to establish the actual causes behind these bacterial changes. Hormone levels – particularly that of oestrogen and changes during menopause – most likely have a role to play.

National BV Day – Are you aware?

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection, which is almost twice as common as thrush yet research indicated that 51 per cent of women have never heard of it.

Today is National BV Day, and is hoping to bring more awareness to the infection and empower women to make the right diagnosis.

If the infection is left untreated it can lead to serious health implications, so it’s time that you knew and understand the facts surrounding it.

“BV is caused by an imbalance in the natural bacteria found in the vagina. The symptoms of BV are quite similar to thrush and, as most women have never heard of thrush and very few have heard about BV, they will tend to misdiagnose it as thrush in the first instance,” explains Dr Dawn Harper, who is supporting the first National BV Day today in association with Balance Activ Vaginal Gel.

BV is twice as prevalent as thrush and, according to experts, it is the leading cause of abnormal discharge for women of childbearing age. 1 in 3 women are likely to develop BV at some point in their lives (that’s 8.9 million women in the UK alone). however, 2 out of 3 women are misdiagnosing BV as thrush due to lack of awareness, and misunderstanding around the symptoms. BV can often be distinguished by an unusual fishy odour, whereas thrush is odourless.

Dr Harper continues: “BV itself is not dangerous but if left untreated, BV has been linked with some serious implications including increased risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (which can lead to reduced fertility) and increased risk of contracting certain Sexually Transmitted Infectins, including HIV. BV has also been linked to early labour and premature birth, if present during pregnancy so it is really important women know how to spot the symptoms of BV so it can be treated effectively.”

National BV Day is hoping to provide women with all the advice and information they need to identify the signs of BV, treat it effectively, prevent recurring infections, and perhaps more importantly, avoid the potentially serious consequences of misdiagnosis.

Unpleasant ‘fishy’ odour which may be more noticeable during or after sexAbnormal discharge – usually thin and grey (heaviest just after a period or after having sex)Vaginal discomfort, irritation or itching

Thrush, is an irritating fungal infection triggered by the species, Candida fungus. Popularly known as yeast infection, it usually attacks people with low immunity, weakness, old age and ill health, HIV infection or on steroids.

1. Thrush symptoms in infants:

In infants or toddlers, thrush is thrush symptomsusually mild and non serious but can be painful. it may cause diaper rashes due to the presence of thrush causing yeast in the stool. in the mouth, thrush patches look like a velvety white coating on tongue, and can be easily mistaken for milk or curd residue. The patches stick firmly and are difficult to wipe off; if rubbed profusely can bleed and result in a sore tongue and mouth. The baby refuses feeds and food, which leads to poor appetite and weakness. Swallowing is difficult and the baby is generally fussy due to oral discomfort. Infants with thrush, can pass it to their mothers who are breast feeding them causing sore and itchy nipples.

2. Thrush symptoms in adults:

Thrush causing, candida fungus, is on an average, present in all healthy adults in small amounts in their mouths, skin or the digestive system. when it multiplies in proportion, thrush symptoms, manifest themselves in different parts of the body accordingly. Though kept under check by other micro organisms in the body, candida fungus grows if the body provides a favorable environment in terms of some illness or medicines, stress, HIV infection, cancer etc.

In adults, oral incidence of thrush infection is sudden and witnesses no incubation period. White lesion like patches are seen on the tongue and the inner oral cavity. best compared to a cottage cheese like layering on tongue, scraping can be painfully bleeding. The patient goes through an irritating oral discomfort and has difficulty in swallowing. if not attended on time, thrush spreads down the esophagus and beyond, and leads to fever and inflammation of the throat.

When a person is also fighting a deadly disease like cancer or HIV and already has a weak immune system, thrush can be more severe in manifestation and may often envelope the lungs, skin liver etc..People who are addicted to smoking, or females taking birth control pills are more susceptible.

3. Vaginal thrush symptoms:

Vaginal thrush or Yeast infection is a common vaginal disease in women and can be categorized into complicated and uncomplicated thrush depending on the severity of symptoms. in normal cases, a woman complains of itching, stinging sensations and soreness in and around the vagina, leading to painful sex and uncomfortable urination. Sometimes an odorless, thin/thick vaginal discharge is also reported. if ignored, the situation may aggravate causing serious complicated thrush which reflects a red and swollen vagina/vulva, cracks and calluses around the vaginal passage and sometimes painful sores of increasing magnitude.

4. Penile thrush symptoms:

Male thrush symptoms manifests itself as a red, swollen, patchy area around the penis head.

Urination becomes difficult due to itching and a brutal burning sensation accompanying the passage of urine.Engaging in sex with with a partner carrying thrush can lead to infection in both males and females.

Thrush is not a life threatening infection and is easily curable. The yeast causing thrush is present in our body already, the prevention lies in controlling its over multiplication. Antifungal medications, in tablet or liquid form are generally prescribed for two weeks to cure thrush, depending on the cause and extent of the infection. Anti-thrush creams for skin, pessaries for vaginal insertion or an oral tablet course are possible treatment options.Healthy lifestyle and conscious hygiene also go a long way in blocking a recurring thrush infection. so stay alert, protected and fit and say goodbye to any possible thrush threats….

Valentine gifts you don’t need By OGE OKONKWO Sunday, February 12, 2012

Two days from today, every nook and cranny of Nigeria will be painted red. or at least a touch of red signifying Valentine’s Day. the day lovers abundantly express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionary, sending greeting cards and dating. Valentine’s Day is all about gifts and sharing but there are “gifts” that shouldn’t be given or gotten. Dr Uchendu Alaefule of the Jay-Alams Hospital, Ikotun, Lagos says that “gifts” that are likely to be contracted this season include oral candidiasis especially for those who will express their love through kissing. Where they get into more intense activity, sexually transmitted infections like Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV and the rest will spread from one person to another during such intimate contacts. These infections can affect people of all ages and backgrounds who are having sex – it doesn’t matter if they are rich or poor.

Oral candidiasis also known as oral thrush is a condition in which the fungus, Candida albicans accumulate on the lining of the mouth causing creamy white lesions on the tongue or inner cheeks. Symptoms include creamy white lesions on the tongue, inner cheeks and sometimes on the roof of the mouth, gums and tonsils. other symptoms include lesions with a cottage cheese-like appearance, pain, slight bleeding if the lesions are rubbed or scraped, cracking and redness at the corner of the mouth (especially in denture wearers); cottony feeling in the mouth and loss of taste. In severe cases, the lesion may spread downward to the esophagus. “you can’t get STDs if you have oral or anal sex” is a common myth people believe about STDs. This is wrong because STDs spread and people think they can only be infected if they have sexual intercourse. the truth is that a person can get some STDs like herpes or genital warts through skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. Viruses or bacteria that cause STDs can enter the body through tiny wounds in the mouth and anus as well as the genitals. It’s because you can’t tell whether someone has an infection and in fact, some people with STDs don’t even know that they are infected. These people are in danger of passing an infection to their sex partners without even realizing it. These infections often do not cause any symptoms and are very common with more than half of us will get one at some time in our lives.” Chlamydia is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis that infects the cervix in women and the urethra and rectum in both men and women. Occasionally, it affects other parts of the body including the throat and eyes with often no symptoms especially among women. if left untreated, it can cause serious problems later in life. it is contracted through unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who is infected and from a mother to her baby during vaginal delivery; by transferring the infection on fingers from the genitals to the eyes although it is rare. Symptoms include painful and frequent urination; lower abdominal pain; vaginal discharge in women caused by an inflamed cervix; white/cloudy and watery discharge from the penis in men that may stain the underwear; pain during sexual intercourse in women or bleeding after sex; irregular menstrual bleeding and testicular pain in men. Genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV). there are two types viz HSV-1 and HSV-2 both of which belong to a wider group called herpes virus or herpes viridae. another well-known virus in this group is Varicella Zoster virus which causes chicken pox and shingles. It’s passed on through skin contact with a person infected with the virus most frequently during sex. the virus affects the areas where it enters the body and can occur during vaginal, anal or oral sex (HSV-1 OR -2) and kissing (HSV-1 only). Symptoms include itching or tingling sensations in the genital or anal area; small fluid-filled blisters that burst leaving small painful sores; pain when passing urine over the open sores (especially in women); headaches; backaches; flu-like symptoms including swollen glands or fever. Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection of the genital tract. the first gonorrhea symptoms generally appear within 2-to-10 days after exposure. however, some people may be infected for months before signs and symptoms occur. the symptoms include thick, cloudy or bloody discharge from the penis or vagina, pain or burning sensation when urinating, frequent urination, pain during sexual intercourse. Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted disease caused by a microscopic, one-celled parasite called Trichomonias vaginalis. This organism spreads during sexual intercourse with someone who already has the infection. the organism usually infects the urinary tract in men but often causes no symptoms in men. Trichomoniasis typically infects the vagina in women and may produce symptoms like greenish yellow, possibly frothy vaginal discharge, strong vaginal odour, vaginal itching or irritation, pain during sexual intercourse, painful urination and light vaginal bleeding Syphilis is a bacterial infection. the disease affects the genitals, skin and mucous membranes but it may also involve many other parts of the body including your brain and your heart. Symptoms of syphilis may occur in four stages – primary, secondary, latent and tertiary. STDs have become common among teens and they are more at risk of getting some STDs. it is important to learn what you can do to protect yourself. STDs are not just an embarrassment; they are a serious health problem. if untreated, some STDs can cause permanent damages such as infertility (the inability to have a baby) and even death (in the case of HIV/AIDS). Some of the things that increase a person’s chances of getting an STD are. Engaging in sexual activity at a young age. This raises his or her chances of becoming infected with an STD Having lots of sex partners – people who have sexual contact, not just intercourse but any form of intimate activity with many different partners are more at risk than those who stay with the same partner Unprotected sex. use of latex condom is the only form of birth control that reduces your risk of getting an STD and must be used every time. Spermicides, diaphragms and other birth control methods may help prevent pregnancy but they don’t protect a person against STDs.

Preventing STDs As with many other diseases, prevention is key. It’s much easier to prevent STDs than to treat them. the only way to completely prevent STDs is to abstain from all types of sexual contacts. but if a person must have sex, then the person must use a condom every time to avoid getting infected.

Health and Fitness Articles » Blog Archive » The Truth About Vaginal Thrush

Treating the symptoms of vaginal thrush, rather than the root cause, is a common mistake made by many women. Covering up the problem actually does very little to solve it. Vaginal thrush or yeast infection is painful, embarrassing, and annoying. Three out of four women contract a yeast infection sometime during their lives. Others will face chronic infections over many years. You cannot approach the issue with external treatments alone. The actual cause is usually a lack of balance inside the vagina. Antibiotics, creams, and feminine OTC products will never give you permanent relief. sometimes they can even exacerbate the problem.

First of all, I am not a doctor. I saw many of them in my attempts, to no avail, to treat my chronic yeast infections. I was forced to educate myself about vaginal health in order to take control of my life. I’m Megan Paul and my passion is helping women to avoid making the same mistakes I did. I used all the OTC creams, took antibiotics for weeks, and even saw three different doctors. these pathways only lead to temporary relief. Once I started to understand the cause of vaginal thrush, I was able to think proactively to effectively treat and prevent it for good.

Candida albicans is the yeast that causes vaginal thrush. it inhabits such bodily regions as the mouth, intestines, and vagina. Those women who are diabetic, pregnant, on antibiotics, and/or immune-suppressed have a higher probability of getting yeast infections. Hormone fluctuations, blood glucose levels, lack of cleanliness, vaginal imbalance, and weakened immune system are all known causes of vaginal thrush.

One way to avoid vaginal thrush is cleaning your vagina properly. Experts recommend that you try to keep your genitals clean and dry as much as possible. using warm water to cleanse rather than harsh soaps also prevents the irritation that can lead to infections. Resist the temptation to use femine sprays, perfumes, or powders, which only cover up the problem temporarily. Never use a feminine douche because it can flush out your natural “friendly bacteria,” which line the vagina and help to resist infections. Douching may provide psychological relief, giving a feeling of cleanliness, but the longer-term effects can be devasting to your vaginal health. Instead, prepare a shallow warm, not hot, bath and add 20 drops of tea tree oil and one cup of apple cider vinegar. Soak in the mixture for 10-20 minutes to thoroughly cleanse and naturally disinfect the area.

Who would have thought that your diet could affect your vagina? The food you choose to eat does impact every part of your body, including the vagina. The reason that diabetics commonly get yeast infections is because blood sugar imbalance is advantageous for fungal growth. Candida albicans grows like wild fire in the presence of sugars. In order to avoid this, you must limit your intake of high-glycemic carbs like refined white breads, white rice, and too much table sugar. Brown rice, quinoa, and other whole grains stabilize blood sugar to help prevent yeast infection. You can also add stevia extract in place of sugar in your coffee and tea. Eat fermented foods that provide “friendly bacteria” to help protect your body’s balance. Examples are yogurt, miso, kefir, fermented cheese, and sauerkraut.

Vaginal thrush is common, irritating, and sometimes even harmful. Do not wait until after you get it to begin changing your daily diet and cleansing habits. A little bit of effort goes a long way. and you only have to learn this information once to make a positive impact and start controlling your vaginal health and wellness right away.

What Is Thrush And How Is It Treated?

Thrush is among those conditions that brings about uncomfortable giggles and pretty apparent embarrassment for both affected individuals and non-sufferers alike. however the simple fact is that particularly in the situation of vaginal thrush, it is actually really common and quite easily treatable.

The article that follows will concentrate largely on vaginal thrush and will discuss topics such as causes of thrush, thrush symptoms and the way to treat the condition.

Causes of Thrush

In a nutshell, thrush is a yeast infection that is generally brought on by the Candida fungus. Typically, Candida resides inside the vagina without resulting in any issues however sometimes there is an imbalance which leads to proliferation of the bacteria and eventually in an infection.

As the Candida fungus survives the best in warm and damp areas of the body, it’s perhaps unsurprising to find out that in addition to the vagina, it could additionally thrive in the mouth and groin. And when it comes to male thrush it could also reside on the glans of the penis.

There are lots of vaginal thrush symptoms that are fairly easy to spot and these can include:

1. Vaginal discharge that’s often thick and white, generally similar in appearance to cottage cheese. the discharge does not usually have an aroma but can nonetheless lead to irritation to the vulva. 2. In a few cases, the vaginal discharge produced by thrush could be thin and watery, but it is still typically white in color. 3. Soreness around the entrance of the vagina. 4. Discomfort during sex – since thrush can be sexually transmitted (though not an STI), it can be a good idea to avoid sex when suffering from the problem. 5. Inflammation and swelling around the vulva. 6. In more serious cases, thrush can result in cracked skin around the vagina.

Fortunately, vaginal thrush is extremely straightforward to treat and while it has the potential to be recurrent, it can be managed quite easily with one of the following strategies of thrush treatment:

1. Anti-yeast medicines in the form of cream or pessaries. these are offered both by prescription and over the counter as well.

2. Oral tablets that are once again offered both through prescription and over-the-counter.

In a few cases, vaginal thrush is so slight that it is barely noticeable and can go away of its own accord. Even so, in case you are suffering from thrush on a regular basis, it’s highly recommended for you to pay a visit to your doctor for advice. That is also especially the case if you’re pregnant. also, should you go through other symptoms not commonly linked with thrush (such as unusual vaginal bleeding), then find medical assistance right away.
